Fallout 76’s Atom shop is in the game’s beta (but not usable just yet)

As you walk through the wasteland in the Fallout 76, be on the lookout for Atoms. Yes, with a capital letter, that’s the game’s microtransaction currency. (We’re aware that technically everything has atoms.) The shop allowing you to spend them in the game is now available, but it is also non-functional; you’ll be using the shop right now just to preview what’s there, even though you can actually pick up some Atoms from in-game achievements.

So what’s for sale? At the moment, it looks like it’s all cosmetic options, although some of the emotes look like they could have some important gameplay functions (like “Dying of Thirst” to indicate when you are, well, dying of thirst). You can check out the story but not spend money right now if you so desire, assuming you’re already in the beta; the finer details of how the shop will work out once the game is live remain to be seen.

I was able to purchase cosmetics from the Atom shop during the beta event last night.

Is this going to be any fun for a solo player? I’m tempted to buy it, but the impressions I’ve seen on youtube say it more fun with friends but if you’re solo the world feels dead without quests and npcs.

There are plenty of quests, they’re just not interesting and mostly serve to move you along the certain path as well as encourage you to group up with others…

Personally I did have fun exploring during the current beta, but my fun was multiplied by about 1000x when I grouped up with one of my online friends (who also likes exploring without rushing), so while grouping is not required I’d say if you’re planning on being completely antisocial in this game – you should probably skip it and wait for other singleplayer games.

If you’re looking for large amounts of quests in a static world, then this isn’t he game for you.
If you’re looking for adventuring in a dynamic world, then this might be of interest, if you love exploring, this is the game for you.

What i’m loving the most is “NOT SAVING EVERY F’in 5 MINUTES!!!” WHOA that felt good. That single change put the immersion level through the roof. It’s live, no going back to a save and it’s wonderful.

My first play session i can’t tell you how many times i screamed; Where the beep are you Codsworth??? like i’m dying over here, then a couple peeps come rushing in and save the day, awesome! Several times i’m so hoping someone comes by i’m going down, and no one is around.

I got more into camp last night, so weird you forget you’re online as it can be so much like a fallout game (Fallout 4 especially), you are alone, then you think, wow like anyone could come by at any minute, but no one does, where is everyone, then i come under attack, 2 mobs in front and some gunfire from behind, ok good another player helping out sweet, i’m stimpacking, finally the 2 mobs go down, wth i’m still being shot, turn, it’s not another player it a farm bot or whatever, WTF? lol

online man! only way to play!

Basically if you’re buying it to play it like the singleplayer Fallouts then you’re probably better off just playing those. Fallout 76 does have to compromise in a few areas compared to the singleplayer RPGs in order to encompass the always online multiplayer survival aspect, but it also adds some different stuff in as well and does a much better job than ESO did of sticking to its roots and feeling like a multiplayer Fallout game.

But essentially for questing there aren’t a ton of human NPCs to interact with, I’m not sure if choices will be a thing or not in the quests that you get, and it seems like most of the side quests are just ‘go find X and/or kill Y’.

It does sound though like Factions will become a thing, joining stuff like the Enclave and Brotherhood of Steel or whatnot. And there will be some form of group PvE content that you can queue for and be matchmade with randoms.

So I guess it really depends on what you want out of it. The singleplayer experience could certainly be solid but the game is obviously designed to be more beneficial if you play with others.

Thanks for the replies. I’ll just sit tight and wait for more reviews after the game launches, watch some streams on Twitch, etc.

I watched a stream of this earlier this evening. I would hope that they will add a FoV option at some point. Not that I am playing but what they have now would be murder for me if I was.

I played around in the beta for like 30 minutes today before work and thought it was pretty good. Will get more time Saturday to try it out further.

Sweet! just checked PC beta tonight till 11 woot! Then again Saturday till about 11 again i think. Awesome!

I’m thankful there was no RDR2 pc version, i always like 2 games on the go to avoid burn out and for those times when you finally get to sit down to play and great the servers are offline, 2 is my limit; Warframe and Fallout 76, i’m set. Literally my only Warframe complaint was that i really miss exploration, and that’s pretty much what F76 is, the missing check mark, lol.
