Elite Dangerous is getting a fleshed-out MMO guild system in Beyond Chapter Four

Frontier is continuing to pump out livestreams highlighting the details of Elite Dangerous’ Beyond Chapter Four. Yesterday, the stream’s focus was on squadrons, essentially a type of player guild in the game.

“Squadrons have been designed for Commanders who want to band together and organise themselves in-game. This might be to play together, or to focus on certain types of gameplay such as bounty hunting, Community Goals, or furthering the agenda of a faction,” Frontier says. “The aim of Squadrons is to support and augment multiplayer organisation and combined effort in-game! The Elite Dangerous community have created so many incredible out-of-game ways to organise how they play Elite Dangerous in player groups, and we would never dream of removing or replacing those systems, but Squadrons offers something for any type of player. If you form a Squadron that is looking to engage in activities such as dominating the leaderboards, taking on the Thargoids, or spreading your faction’s influence, the in-game squadron tools are designed to help you in these pursuits.”

They sound quite a bit like guilds in other MMOs, complete with ranks, applications, chat channels, and leaderboards. Do note it’s not yet clear whether players can join more than one at a time, but it kinda looks like not.

MOP reader and tipster Colin kindly passed along his take on the squadron feature if you’re up for a closer look at that!

Its seeming as the frontier focus for this update is very much behind the idea of supporting group play. Although as a solo player that’s not really my thing its been writing on the wall of the updates for some time. I’m dubious whether the work of frontier with squadrons is going to pan out, the issues with private group management have been a headache for years now.

Hopefully this gets some mileage for groups and given how many of them there are with regard the BGS (a bugbear of mine since it typically erodes all my rep with the NPC factions or empties the board of missions for those factions i’m allied with) Its clear there’s a lot of positivity around the latest update.

Sadly the mission board woes and upcoming changes make me anxious, wing missions are a joke [see image] for the most part and a bit tired of most of their efforts. That said the night vision mode and new UI look interesting.

Some really nice changes and additions coming up.
I’m still not clear if you can align your squadron with a minor power, ie Mastopolos Mining Inc or whether it has to be with Powerplay factions. It would be nice if we could do the former but it wouldn’t surprise me if we can’t.

System chat will be pretty cool, I liked local only chat but it can be quite restrictive as well.

The mining changes were awesome, muchj like the planetary scanning there’s now a bit of a skill element to it which is always nice. The explosions are superb, the sound team does such a good job.

I’ve not seen any indication you can align squadrons, although its silly to have a manual player group model for BGS and squadrons but i wouldn’t be surprised if these remain seperate for now. After all you can’t actually align yourself with a BGS faction and got the impression early on [before it was removed] you could take the squadron space cruiser anywhere in the galaxy on your travels.

You can assign a Squadron to a Superpower, a Player faction and/or a Powerplay Power if you wish. The main issues are with the 500 player limit to a squadron. This means the Big player factions (i.e. Hutton Truckers, Fuel Rats, EDC, etc) will have to have several squadrons for their faction and then still have to co-ordinate those squadrons via discord. However, it is still a vast improvement on things at the moment.
