The Repopulation hires new composer, continues cleanup and revamp of starter map

Idea Fabrik is still plugging away at The Repopulation, according to its end-of-October dev blog. “The last two tests we did gave us some very valuable information. With the additional cleanup, we’ve progressed 30% further than our previous push attempt,” the studio says. “This has given us valuable data to base the direction of November’s testing. On saying that, documentation and cleanup will continue.”

The team says it’s still working on the revamp for the starter area, Plymouth Control Center, tweaking terrain and flora and cleaning up props as well tidying up and documenting the GUI. And the company has picked up a new composer, who has some mighty big shoes to fill given the high-quality of the game’s original music.

Finally, Idea Fabrik posted up a development video that basically gives players a look into what exactly is going on when the devs are cleaning up a map.

A new composer? Wow, game saved.

I’ve been waiting for The Repopulation since the first time I saw an FPS aiming reticle in StarWars Galaxies. Bought into the last hurrah of this game couple of years ago, only to be able to play a couple of times before shutdown.

Will this ever be released?

I am not sure you’re aware but if you own the game you can play even now. Shortly after IF bought the game they restarted the servers.

As for release, its hard to tell when that will be. They’re currently optimizing a lot of the game, basically in the same vein as the video in this article… consolidating objects to reduce their number etc… I think its safe to say its not going to be anytime soon but considering they’re hiring new people like a composer, I’d say that is a good sign their still committed to the game which is great

Emmanuel you seem to be still involved. I played waaay back when and was really hoping for the best. Can you tell me if there is still a commitment to the amazingly complex and deep crafting system that they had started work on at the start of this project?

Involved is probably not the right word, more like keeping an eye on it :)

wow couldnt you ask me an easier question like i dont know whats the secret to life?

So with regards to crafting they do plan to revamp the entire system and they say the main target with that is to streamline everything rather then remove complexity. Now obviously the problem there is streamlining will undoubtedly remove some complexity but they do have an argument how that might not be a bad thing. This is where pies come in :) yeah there was a discussion on this (well its still going on) and its centered around pies. Currently they say (and they’re right) crafting is very hard to get into, they want to make it easier for starter crafters to well get started without giving up while still keeping crafting the core pillar of the game.

To craft a pie in game right now you essentially need a phd in molecular biology and pie is something that should be crafted by new players and thats a problem. Like you need to craft flour and that involves getting seeds/nuts, vitamins, and water. to get vitamins you need calcium and fish oil which you get with cod, fat, ethanol and stuff. For calcium you need a shell and cheesecloth filter for which you need ammonia, sterilizing agent and cloth. For ammonia you need fungi and a heat source, … well you get the point. Currently to get flour you need to go through a gazillion of steps and you need like 32 different ingredients. When you consider flour is just 15% of what you need to craft a pie well things get scary for a new player and to be honest I do think they’ve got a point there.

Now at a high level what they’re proposing is just like in real life you just go out and buy flour you’d be able to do the same in game for basic items like flour, salt etc.. further more they want to stream line recipes instead rather then having separate recipes for meat pie, fruit pies etc.. you have one recipe (pie) and you get the right type of pie depending on what filling you plug in.

It wasnt all lets remove this and that though there are some interesting changes planned as well. Like experimentation, where you can get different results based on what items you use in a craft.

They also plan to introduce deconstruction which allows players to get a % of mats used in creating an item. They say this could go really well with failed crafts as well as loot. Like they plan to keep the crafted is best paradigm but they dont want looted to be useless so with deconstruction it can be a source of materials though they say they want to also make it so you could essentially craft augments and make looted as good as crafted too.

grades is also going to change, they didnt go into details here but it seems its going to be expanded in a way as now in addition to materials grades there will also be tiers based on skill level. They say they’ll talk more about this once they have the basic crafting nailed down.

thats pretty much in a nutshell what they said on the matter. I am very much into crafting myself, my hope is they do exactly like they said, streamline starter recipes but keep complexity for higher level stuff.

Edit: Ohh forgot a very important detail, changes to crafting is spear headed by someone who used to work at ABT on crafting which kinda means this is their baby and thus are likely to protect it as best they can.

I’d note that the dev team is actually very similar. IF went back and re-hired a huge portion of the laid-off ABT staff. Including the individuals who pretty much caused the problems for ABT in the first place.

Well thank you.
That was a great answer.
I will put this game back on the radar.

I’d say yes. It’s the showcase of their engine.
