Path of Exile is launching buyable, moddable private leagues this week

Remember how Grinding Gear said it had a bunch of Path of Exile announcements queued up for the next couple of weeks, including the expansion announcement? Well, yesterday’s wasn’t about the expansion, but it is pretty nifty: Essentially, GGG is allowing PC players to create their own private leagues with their own difficulty mods and rulesets.

“We designed private leagues with the needs of two groups of players in mind. The first group is players who want a more challenging Path of Exile experience. The second is players who want to see how far they and their friends can get without outside influence from the rest of a league. Private Leagues will be fun for content creators who want to create an entertaining stream or video by playing Path of Exile on obscenely difficult settings, potentially alongside members of their communities. Philosophically, it’s important to us that Private Leagues don’t make the game easier. That’s what special events like Flashback, Turmoil and Mayhem are for. We’ll continue to run special events like these in the future.”

Players will be able to spend points (and even crowdfund that cost) to create their private leagues, starting with 10 players and 10 days, with more points for more players and days, up to two months (right now). The mods on offer include increased damage and hitpoints for mobs, reduced player resistances, no loot stashes, no magic item drops, no NPC vending, famine, and eventually, things like high durability loss.

Everything goes live this week, so stay tuned!

I want semi hardcore, not perma death like hc but instead a significant consequence. It could be loss of one piece of worn gear, or xp/level loss or xp depth, currency cost of resurrection or similar.

No unique drops league might be interesting too (I have never been a fan of that uniques-concept in PoE).

And generally a working simplification and balancing overhaul, which really is about high time for the actual game too. Because this is PoE’s real issue – Majority of players can’t use logic to make their own build (and a build is not just the passive tree just to be clear) anymore because only the experts have enough knowledge to make it viable.. and their build is not just better, it is literally often 100 times higher damage, and don’t get me started on survive-ability which is pure vodoo to most players. It is so bad that there was a twitch streamer (Havoc some number) who had an immortal character – He was actually immune to all damage, ubers and and everything (you can see for yourself if you find the Havoc dude on twitch).
It used to be the fun part of PoE .. to find those little things that could optimize your build, but it is just way way waaaaaaaay too complex and ridiculous now, and the scaling of these things are just off the charts. (But at least it is not Diablo3, and despite its flaws PoE is still by far the best online arpg)

This is one feature I have been looking forward to since it was announced. While I do wish is had some more interesting mod options, like Ancestral, Exiles Everywhere, No Portals, BLAMT, etc, I’ll still get a good amount of fun out of these. I think they’ll be a great addition for when you get half-way through whatever the current league is, just to change things up a bit for a week.

Blizzard just handed Grinding Gears the keys to the castle and they are going to run with it and make some hay while the sun shines. Rudy could not have said it better:

PSA for PS4: Might want to keep an eye out around December 4th, just saying :-)

I’m really hoping the positive feedback on Delve will lead to a full time content alternative. After so many months/years of the same maps it’s a bit stale. All this League I wanted to do was run delves and just couldn’t. Eventually after running the same maps for the 11 billionth time just lost interest in the league.

League modifiers are fun, and could provide a really spicy/fun time for friends or community groups, but doesn’t really fundamentally address the monotony of the game underneath it all.

I have tried POE a number of times, and although I can see the allure, it is just not for me. I do recognize the quality, depth, and focus of the game.

That being said, I sure wish another company I know would take a look at how POE execs and developers serve their customers. This company is a shining example of how to keep your players excited about the present and future of the product!

Damnit, I wish I liked POE more than I actually do. GGG continue to do amazing things with it that excite me, but I just can’t translate that excitement into interest in the game. Oh well, still awesome news for everyone playing, I’m sure my brother is going to love this.

This is going to be great for the PoE streaming community I imagine.

Personally I am not sure if I will try this out as I normally play solo self found and don’t really see any great reason to play on an exclusive server. Well that and I would much rather spend my points on cool cosmetic stuff :-)

I haven’t been big on PoE, but that seems like a pretty smart move.

Hello PoE. I’ll be coming to see you soon. Why, yes. I was at Blizzcon. Why do you ask?

PoE have a series of announcements queued up ready and I think the next one will be in about an hour assuming I can time zone correctly, 9am NZ time in anycase.

They couldn’t time this any better and its almost like they knew what was going to happen elsewhere even before it happened.

Well they did hire a guy very intimate with Diablo. I wouldn’t be surprised if Brevik still talks with people over at Blizzard to shoot the shit. Someone may have dropped some accidental, heavy shit into GGG’s lap.
