All right, I’ve finally figured it out: New World’s current map is basically Game of Thrones’ map. Which is certainly appropriate, given the shared source material and context and likely content too. However, that’s not a permanent picture, as is becoming clearer with each new reveal from Amazon Game Studios.
Over the weekend, the studio tweeted out an update to the alpha map that shows more and more land coming into focus, with a much larger area covered by a visible fog of war. So hey, it won’t remind you of Westeros forever – at least not on the map.
Take a peek.

Color me intrigued. Not really sure what to make of it yet, but let’s see how it goes.
I can’t wait to see what Smed et al have cooked up this time. Colour me intrigued and excited! :)
He is as good chef as always – I can tell you that much.
Not a Smed production. They working on something else pretty sure.
After countless hours in this alpha, I would like to notify everyone here that this game in its current iteration is not a survival game, but the truest gankbox since UO pre-trammel.
We already pretty much knew that. Was why most of us lost interest fast.
but how’s the twitch integration and cross-media synergy shaping up?
As a person who’s put 50 hours into the alpha I really hope this isn’t the entire realm. You could stroll from the south tip to the north in 20mins on foot and 10mins from side to side. Im not sure if mounts were planned but there would be no need if this is the case. Let’s hope it’s not that tiny of a game realm.
Since no one seems to have experience in the comments, I thought I’d put in my two cents.
You’re one of the reasons why public Alphas and Betas are frowned upon by developers. And then turned into a fee-to-access extravaganza instead of actual testing grounds as they should be.
You’re under an NDA and set up to test and communicate ONLY with other testers and the developers. To bring feedback and discussion of the contents there within with the developers in order to turn about a better end product.
Just…just…whatever.
Wow, so heated.
but but, I have been filling out the surveys and giving forum feedback :/
but I just wanted you to know and..
okay.. :(
Agree, but there’s two things here for you too Siphaed! First, this was a little on the aggressive side. Second, that’s partially on developers to start weeding out bad testers and getting the good ones in, if they just aren’t all about the $$$.
That’s unfortunate to hear. Hopefully they’ll keep expanding the size with more people.
As much as I love maps… the UI and mechanics are my main focus for any game.
Here’s hoping that they can make it feel as faithful to a true “open/old world” vibe as Red Dead R2 does with it’s western. I really can’t say enough about the exploration factor in RDR2 in terms of immersion and how the NPCs react to you and other NPCs.
I believe Amazon has the talent to do it because they’ve opened up the checkbook to hire folks, but I have a feeling that by throwing all players in there as a PvP game together will ruin this title.
I believe you are correct. They have one chance only to capture the market and they are aiming at the wrong target.
Personally I give them one chance in three…no more tea, anyone?
Pvp is the wrong market eh? What are the most popular PC games in the world right now? All pvp oriented.
Dang, looks like they really did choose poorly.
Oof, that is not this game. At all.
RDR2 is fantastic. They really nail the open world exploration.
New World doesn’t even have (non-mob) NPCs. It’s definitely noting even remotely like Colonial RDR2.
I’m still just waiting on them to say “Join now and get priority look for e-sports recruitment!”
I really like the old timey promotion poster.
It’s interesting they put a female face on the character in the foreground while in the background, it’s clearly a male in a shadowed, secondary role.
Given the political and social times, it seems like a statement poster as I could see them having two final mockups for release; one with a female holding the torch and another version with a male holding the torch.
Choosing the female poster shows Amazon at least understands “what time it is” with regards to recent events.
Or simply take out the events and say, “some of these other games have female characters in development for years before they even promise to release one. Look, we are normal. You can actually play a female without any bother. Like normal developers do.”
I didn’t really see anything in it – but if we are playing hypothetical that’s what I see. I think it is so ridiculous some developers, like Star Citizen, promise female characters as some sort of feature. Like it a mysterious thing creating a female chest and a smaller frame – when 50% of the world’s population is there as your reference.
That said, I didn’t notice the female face until you mentioned. I like the art still more now. Cool stuff.
Nobody cares. Ill pass if they think females will rule the wilderness. I will not be giving them money and will play classic WoW where there was no such thing as look at me bs
I think you really missed the mark on that one friend.
What what a clown you are…and delusional haha.
I played a female character since wow launched and ive played with SO many others that did the same because some of us actually like to watch a cute butt.
Sounds like someone has insecurity issues.
You’re reading way too much into it. Like the character in the background is just a big sack of clothing with little to no discernible features.
Could be.
It’s just over the many years of gaming, I’m used to (conditioned?) to a male, White character as the “lead” on the cover, flanked by females, minorities and aliens as “wingmen”.
I take no affront to any of that… it’s just how the industry was. Usually you only found a female as the lead in a ‘sexy’ kind of fantasy role, but in titles such as this where it’s “rugged adventurer” type, it’s usually a man.. especially in a game with ‘historical overtones’.
As to discernible features, looks like the character in the background has a beard and “Frenchy-type” stashe, where the ‘female’ in front doesn’t… but that’s me again probably. /shrug
It’s Monday, so we need something to talk about. :)
Didn’t really wanna have that conversation, but that’s all about percentages. When the majority of your customer base is white males most businesses are going to cater to that demographic. It’s pretty basic when you think about it but common sense has long gone out of style when it comes to these matters.
As for beard and features…wat…?
Sure looks like a goatee to me.. which is a beard. Even more so after you’ve blown it up.
