New World gives us a glimpse at builders, pushes alpha sign-ups

Crafting professions are the topic of the week over at New World. Blacksmithing got some press a few days ago, and now it is building’s turn to shine. Amazon Game Studios gave us a glimpse at what this pioneering profession will entail.

“In New World, many master craftsmen are needed,” the studio said while showing a trio of screenshots. “To expand empires, Companies will need Builders to provide fortifications that strengthen and protect cities.”

Amazon would very much like to invite you to sign up for the alpha test, by the way. The studio posted instructions for PC players to enter their name into a random drawing for one of these desirable berths.

Looks like one of those “Sandbox” games about nothing. I’m sure it will be a great success. xD

If/when they offer server rule sets besides Gankbox Mode, I’ll be more interested. As it is now, it’s basically just made for groups of PvPers roaming around. Not to mention how absolutely terrible the community was the last time I logged in. No shortage of racism and homophobia in this title, to be sure.

… And to provide a target rich environment for this open world PvP title.

This is a common misconception.

The main reason why most PvP style games (survival games, FFA PvP environments, etc) are crafting based is because crafting is the best solution to introducing an item loss mechanic.

Item loss mechanics are good in PvP environments because they prevent “death rushing” that you see in most zero consequence games with PvP. A classic example was someone who dies in WOW who can then just resurrects on top of you to get the first attack on round 2. By people losing gear it prevents this since when you resurrect you now have to take a minute to regear. Even if you have multiple sets prepared you will eventually run out which will give most people pause before just blindly throwing away gear/sets. What this ultimately means is someone can win a fight which putting a win condition is very crucial in a game where players are functionally immortal.

However in order to support that then that means gear needs to be relatively cheap and easy to replace. Cheap enough that re-gearing isn’t overly difficult but meaningful enough that you aren’t just throwing it away. The best solution there is always going to be crafting because it will represent a time investment for gathering materials to make the gear but when well balanced not so much that you will never want to risk losing it.

To further support this you can see a profession like “Builder” that they’re showing off and can infer that in New World many buildings simply won’t be built to last. Buildings will go up, come down, and need to be rebuilt. So if anyone is having the idea that they will be able to build a city and it will stay up a super long time may want to reconsider what they’re telling us by adding a whole crafting line dedicated to building.

No seriously, go sign up, download and try this game. It’s gorgeous and super simple to figure out by any vetted MMORPG player and it performs remarkably well for an alpha. Very few on MOP have done so and this is really the time to give a very much anticipated game like this a try. I don’t feel like I’m the only one who’s experienced it, in the comments section when discussing the game.

Unless I missed something, there’s still a NDA so I can’t discuss my experiences.

Maybe they can’t keep randoms from typing up experiences, but heavy watermarks sure keep screens and videos down.
