The Daily Grind: Which MMO NPC do you hate with an undying passion?

The right answer is Sara Oakheart.

Sara Oakheart. Let me tell you about Sara Oakheart. If you haven’t ever played Lord of the Rings Online, you wouldn’t have a clue, but believe me, you’d end up hating her too if you encountered her.

Sara pops up in a number of quests along the first volume of the epic story as an old lady who — more often than not — requires the player to babysit her as she dodders here and there and everywhere. Her agonizingly slow pace has sent many-a-LOTRO player into screaming fits of “WALK FASTER! I’LL GET YOU A NEW STICK!” But what really seems to spark the hate is that at the end of each escort, Sara then dashes ahead like a marathon sprinter. She was clearly messing with us.

There are plenty of MMO characters who I hate that come to mind, but Sara’s right up there at the top of that list. Tell me yours: Which NPCs do you hate with an undying passion and why? Who are the jerks, the whiny complainers, and the incompetent fools you simply cannot stand?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Tough question. Sara Oakhart is certainly in the running. Many of the dwarves from Mines of Moria… But most recently, I got back into Diablo III, and developed a strong dislike for Adria. In fact, I think I despise her the most. I can’t forgive her for what she did to her daughter — she turned an innocent, her own daughter, into evil incarnate.

EQ1-Holly Windstalker. As an evil character (Human SK of Bertoxxulous was my main) at low level going to Blackburrow to level up, she was a nightmare. She was my first ‘wtf’ moment in that game when I was resting after a fight on my way to BB.

I made it one of my side goals once I hit 65 (the level cap at the time) to hunt her down and on the way protect other evil characters from this loony. Eventually I let my pet solo her while I sat by and watched just to feel a bit better about it and one of my favorite times was when a mid-level human rogue was being hunted by her and I not only saved him, I got to annihilate her at the same time.

Petty for sure but EQ1 had too many of these annoying NPCs that were 100 times worse for brand new players, which I was when I first encountered her.

Yrel. As a death knight she was the Clippy to my Office, the Jar Jar to my phantom menace. I don’t care for NPCs that follow you around when you just want to murder mobs, let alone sniveling paladins….

Kizdean Gix from Everquest. He was a high level mob in Western Commonlands who would prey on low level players. He would kill me all the time, and then again when I would run for my corpse. Needless to say, I one day hit max level and camped the crap out of him. lol

I appreciate this so much. Kizdan was an utter a-hole! My poor lowbie barbarian shaman couldn’t see a damn thing in the dark and I would always fall prey to him while chasing wisps. I may log into EQ right now just to kill Kizdan…

Harrison fucking jones. The walking, talking avatar for “why bother with original content when we can plagiarise and call it a pop culture reference”. The ultimate low for me in WoW was wondering all through vanilla -wrath what the gates to Uldum in Tanaris lead to and all it lead to was a zone wide indiana jones rip off that was like 20% of the questing in the entire expansion. What a god damn lazy experience and Jones sums that all up in one character model. References can be fine, but when they are not on top of content but the actual content you are just ripping someone elses work off either through laziness or lack of anything worthwhile coming out of your own writers.

Nero tol Scaeva is a complete penis. He’s a smarmy, arrogant, mincing jerk whose presence dilutes every story he’s a part of.
