World of Warcraft on stumbling into a woman-dominated cast for Battle for Azeroth

It's sort of like progress.

If you hadn’t noticed, the cast of this particular World of Warcraft expansion is pretty heavy on the leading ladies. Sylvanas, Jaina, Talanji of the Zandalari, Azshara, Tyrande… pretty much every well-known woman out of lore is here. A recent discussion with Forbes sheds some light on how this came up, which was mostly happy coincidence that the developers weren’t really trying to accomplish. (And that’s not counting the fact that, you know, Saurfang, Blightcaller, Anduin, Greymane, and so forth still get major story time in the expansion. It’s hardly more of a girl’s trip.)

For those of you with more interest in the hard details of changes arriving in the game, perhaps you’ll be happier with the latest hotfixes for the game fixing some Uldir issues and balance problems. And making Ulduar a fair bit easier, to boot. They’re minor tweaks, but they should make your adventures in Uldir slightly less difficult in unintended ways, which is a good thing.

I appreciate that it’s largely an organic component for the kul’tiran. A generation of men went to kalimdor with the admiral, and it’s heavily implied hardly anyone returned.

I’m digging it, but I find it hard to believe that it wasn’t a conscious decision to put the women in the spotlight.

Nothing wrong with that in theory, but I question when games push a seemingly political agenda and whether the strategy to cater to societies currents is simply to increase sales.

I still haven’t finished even normal Uldir. I’m 6/8 and am slightly embarassed about it haha.

I don’t know why they nerfed Fetid Devourer, it’s probably the easiest fight in Uldir. I guess they just want to let people finish up Uldir as the next tier is upon us!

Hard to tell tbh if it was intentional or not.

On one hand, Malfurion, Saurfang, Anduin, Greymane, Blightcaller, and some other male characters do get their moments and whatnot. On the other hand, yeah the main leading characters sans-Anduin are basically all females. But it makes sense because with Zuldazar you’ve got Princess Talanji ascending to the throne (IDK if she existed prior to BfA with Zul, I never saw that storyline in MoP or wherever), Kul Tiras obviously demands a story revolving around Jaina Proudmoore coming to terms with her inner demons and the people she betrayed, the Horde is led by Sylvanas, and Teldrassil was nuked so Tyrande is freaking pissed.

I think it’s more a string of coincidences with multiple storylines being more focused on the female characters than just “oh yeah the goal of this expansion is to empower the female characters” or whatever.

Either way I’m cool with it! I probably just read into stuff too much, hehe.

Look at it this way: If you aren’t sure it was done to pander, that means it was done tastefully enough not to feel completely hamfisted, which is good! Especially in a game not especially known for subtlety in its story beats. ;)

Calling an almost all-female cast an “happy coincidence” is sexist. It implies that men aren’t wanted as part of the cast, or if they are they should be in a minority. A clear case of discrimination.(*sarcasm off) Just wanted to say that’s what’s wrong with the current gender debate.

Reader

But it’s not sexist if it’s against men. /s

Seriously? I’m not sure if you’re conscious of the bullshit rhetoric you’re clinging to or if you’re just incapable of a bit of critical thinking.
You’re talking about a series that has *always* based more heavily on male characters than female characters and for once there’s a situation where there’s more women than men and someone makes one positive comment about this that triggers you to scream “DISCRIMINATION!”.
Are you for fucking real?
The problem with the gender debate is insecure men being little bitches and crying victim-hood the moment that someone appreciates a world that’s not all about them. Fucking grow a pair and get over it.

Thanks for making my point, Mr. Passive-Aggressive. The Feminist Movement is laudating your anon efforts. Keep fighting the good fight.

There was nothing “passive” about my post, but considering how badly you understand the definition of discrimination, I guess I shouldn’t be surprised to see you mis-labelling something else.

Telling me to “grow a pair” is a way of stereotyping me. What if I don’t want to “grow a pair”, what if I think the classic definition of masculinity is wrong, what if I think the stereotyping of all sexes should be reevaluated? You, sir, are discriminating me and you’re are not coy about it. If you think the gender-debate has only one side you’re clearly wrong.

I told you to grow a pair, because your point is so fucking far from reasonable that it’s not worth me trying to talk to you like a reasonable adult. You’re crying victim for men because for the first time in WoW history, ever, it’s not completely all about them and someone says that they’re happy to see this.
Do yourself a favor and learn the difference between equity and equality. Also look up the difference between equilibrium and balance.
But I doubt you care to. All you’re concerned about is whether you can twist the rules of discrimination to throw your own personal pity party and claim rights as the victim.
Fuck off.

No, it really isn’t. Here’s a tissue for your tears. My heartfelt condolences for any offense you did take, good sire.

Your original post: Waaa! What about meeeeen?!?!?!
You now: Have a tissue!
Your lack of self-awareness is staggering. But keep your tissue since I’m not here to complain or cry. I’m just here to call you out for the fucking stupid shit that you seem so oblivious about.
Go back to fapping to your waifu and pitying yourself about mens rights.

Maybe you should have put the “sarcasm off” in flashing neon since it apparently slipped by someone.

Companies aren’t on a crusade for equality. They listen to their market research. This wasn’t by accident, focusing more on the female gamer is smart because it’s the fastest growing gaming population and having female protagonists in games doesn’t negatively impact the male gamer’s interest.

Besides, I’m not sure women should be celebrating this one, the story is awful.

I actually like having more female characters compared to previous expansions. It’s just a shame that Jaina is the only one that’s actually for once decently written.

You can say what you will about Sylvie, but Talanji and Azhara are basically on point.

And I thought BfA was all about Zappy Boi.

When you focussed on dudes and left your women behind for metzens broken women/”damaged goods”/corruption fetish and now you ran out of everything else.

“b-but maybe now with different writers we will get the female characters doing something beyond being broken wrecks or corruption fetish shit right out of a hentai doujin”

I saw what you did there…

Ignore splitting the expansion content into two sets of three zones that are inaccessible by opposite factions. Ignore the crappy azurite armor system. Ignore the mind numbing grind for . . . well anything. Ignore the meaningless level ‘advancement’. Ignore the removal of all that was fun in Legion and any fun stuff from other previous expansions.

By God, let’s give ’em WOMEN in the crappy story! That can be the new ‘content’!

Just a “happy” coincidence. Happy because it’s always cool when women get their spotlight, but i put it in commas because it’s not happy for Blizz’s storytelling, which been’s getting worse by the minute.
