No, private World of Warcraft servers aren’t shutting down for World of Warcraft: Classic

This is my surprised face.

So remember how a whole lot of private World of Warcraft servers justified their operation by claiming that the real reason they were operating was because there were no classic server options? Did anyone actually believe that? Because it turns out that the owners of the Elysium server have decided that no, they’ll still keep operating with World of Warcraft: Classic on the way.

We’ll give you a few moments to pick up the shattered remnants of your monocle from the floor due to your extreme shock. If you have a case of the vapors and require smelling salts, they are available in the lobby.

The supposed debate now largely focuses around whether or not the classic server will feature the modern game’s sharding technology, but even Elysium’s administrators admit that the primary point of contention is that they already have their place and community and don’t want to disrupt it. It remains to be seen whether the playerbase will remain in place or Blizzard will decide that now is the time to get frisky with some C&D letters; regardless, it at least puts to bed any claims that this is about the lack of official classic servers.
