No, private World of Warcraft servers aren’t shutting down for World of Warcraft: Classic

This is my surprised face.

So remember how a whole lot of private World of Warcraft servers justified their operation by claiming that the real reason they were operating was because there were no classic server options? Did anyone actually believe that? Because it turns out that the owners of the Elysium server have decided that no, they’ll still keep operating with World of Warcraft: Classic on the way.

We’ll give you a few moments to pick up the shattered remnants of your monocle from the floor due to your extreme shock. If you have a case of the vapors and require smelling salts, they are available in the lobby.

The supposed debate now largely focuses around whether or not the classic server will feature the modern game’s sharding technology, but even Elysium’s administrators admit that the primary point of contention is that they already have their place and community and don’t want to disrupt it. It remains to be seen whether the playerbase will remain in place or Blizzard will decide that now is the time to get frisky with some C&D letters; regardless, it at least puts to bed any claims that this is about the lack of official classic servers.

What do you expect? Nostalrius I believe and trust had honest intentions. Elysium on the other hand had gm’s selling max level characters fully geared.. They are shocking and money hungry and i’d never play that shite.

Theres always going to be a demand for classic wow from people so hard up to pay the 9.99 a month subscription. I myself played 1.12.1 servers for a few years when I was a broke scrub back before I started playing retail in 2008 so the demand has always been there and it has always been thriving.

Just feeling very reassured finally I can invest time into classic and not lose my character after x months/years.. so hyped.

Some servers will close and some will.remain active but it doesnt matter, they will.die out eventually or make tbc+ servers. Blizz done a good thing with.this.

I’m not quite sure if Eliot Lefebvre succumbs to a desire to make a garish article or he’s just a dishonest person. Some servers are going to shut down when Classic launches, some are not. But he carefully picks only one PS project which has already been known to continue its operation untill it’s profitable and generalizes as much as possible. I’ve already noticed that his Destiny II articles are quite biased, and this one isn’t much better.

Well, one more reason for me to avoid reading his articles in future then.

There are some real journalists on MoP. And there are some “i dont know what im talking about but ill talk anyway” bloggers. I guess thats fine for sheer variety.

So which pirate server do you play on, and what’s your class and spec?

I’m not playing on any PS since Classic was announced more than a year ago. So you guessed wrong.

Well, I’ll cheerfully give my money to Blizzard instead of any private server, I’ve always wanted to. Hopefully a lot of people will.

IMO even ‘classic’ private servers have a lot of crutches in place (I can’t think of one currently that requires the piles of FR that were originally needed to run MC, for example) that will come as a startling revelation to players who think they play vanilla, but don’t really.

But yeah, obviously, some people would prefer to play for free, etc. Duh. It’s a little reductionist to suggest otherwise. Obviously both sides have been disingenuous (anyone recall Blizz’s: “The dog ate our homework”)?

Lmao, and what made playing on NOstalrius for example “not playing on vanilla”? If anything, Nostalrius or LIghts hope were much closer to vanilla experience since they were blizzlike unlike what blizzard trying to do with its classic (adding some modern improvements).

Hmm. I wonder what the phony outrage will be now?

Can’t wait to see it, and laugh. Heh.

Great meta here. Using another game in disguise!

Unless I end up playing vanilla WoW more, I probably won’t mess with the official WoW Classic. As it is, I’ve just been casually dabbling with leveling a character on Elysium, but I couldn’t justify a sub fee for playing as little as I do and I don’t have any interest in going back to any modern WoW stuff.

Like i (and many others) said.. it was NEVER about the BS excuse of “Blizzard wont give us what we want to pay for”

It was mostly just about getting to play WoW for FREE.

Sure, some of the server admins are shutting their services down, but many of the players will just migrate to the one(s) that dont.

Zero respect for these miscreants.

I’m sure that’s why so many petitioned blizzard to offer classic servers right? Because doing so helps them get the game for free.

It isn’t an all or nothing situation and you’re being ridiculously stubborn at this point to still be claiming that nobody wants the classic servers. True enough, there are certainly those who play on private servers who just want to play for free. There are those running private servers who just want to unethically make money off “donations”.

To ignore however, the servers that did and will shut down (there were several that did as soon as classic was announced), the players who did not even play on private servers who supported the petition (like myself), the extremely positive reception to the classic announcement, and the positive reception to the recent classic “demo”? Sounds almost like a grudge, that or you just can’t let go of that prediction for some reason. Would it kill you to give legit fans a bit more credit?

Seriously. It’s a meta issue, that people just don’t seem to want to realize, that there is ‘variable’ in things, not that everything is either just either one way or another. We are too messy of a species, for that all or nothing mind view.

I am so surprised that everyone wasn’t just playing Free WoW. They wanted the game they paid for (?) originally. That’s all.

Light’s Hope is. Elysium isn’t. Kronos isn’t. The pserver scene right now is hyped for TBC, since they’ll play vanilla on Classic or Kronos ( which will be a ghost town, for sure ).
