Black Desert outlines plans for the Archer, battle royale mode, and the O’dyllita expansion

As promised Pearl Abyss splashed out for its Festa event in South Korea this weekend, with big announcements for local and global fans of Black Desert. Let’s get the weird news out of the way first: BDO’s getting a 50-man battle royale mode this winter (it’ll roll out to us at some point after the Korean launch). “In this mode, every player starts as a Black Spirit and needs to find a fallen adventurer and possess it,” PA and Kakao say. “By destroying nearby supply crates and defeating mobs players can accumulate equipment and skills. When everyone is killed except for one survivor, the game ends with a victory message.”

Now to the predictable news, since Kakao had already teased it: The Archer is launching December 12th. That’s in all regions, mind you. Expect to be able to roll the new toon with this week’s patch. That patch will also deliver an experience boost event, a free butler, a new starting cutscene, and storyline tweaks.

Finally, the juicy stuff: Pearl Abyss is working on a new expansion in the O’dyllita maps, as well as a new territory war PvP mode, a do-over for renown, and tweaks for caphras enhancements. “[O’dyllita] features many new fantastic locales such as The Valley of Olun, the Thorn Tree Forest and the Castle of Thorns. These lands are inhabited by the Turo, large powerful beasts that move in groups of two or three. Another race of mobs is the Ahib, dark magic wielding bear-like creatures that are a force to be reckoned with.” No ETA on this one.

I really gave this game a fair shake, and it has soooo many really killer things going on with it, as an old EQ, EQ2 and Vanguard player….but the cash shop is always there looming. I bought the pets because looting once you start grinding is ridiculous… but thats all I was giving it. What ever happened to earning cool stuff in game? Maybe i’m just too old school but where is the fun in just buying all this stuff that looks good? Wouldn’t it be better if you earned it by killing certain mobs or accomplishing something in game? The cash shop thing I just can’t get past nowadays… I feel no connection to the game or something. Nothing seems meaningful. I think the 2nd most annoying thing about BDO is there is 0 reason to ever communicate with another player. It’s just a single player game that has others running around in it with you.

TLDR; To hell with cash shops, and games being “MMO” but giving no reason to group or communicate! SO much WASTED potential with this one. It sucks.

I’ve been away for a long while, but on my return, I have to say I love my Ranger. As a result, I’m not sure I want to roll Archer at the moment. Why are they doubling up on the bow classes?

Arktouros

They arne’t. Archer uses a Hand Crossbow/Gauntlet and then a Longbow for their Awakening weapon. This is compared to Ranger that uses a Bow/Dagger and then a Sword for Awakening.

Even then 10/16 classes are paired up with a similar style class that is similar but different so not really unheard of them doubling up on things. I remember in a past interview they were asked why they don’t just release male/female versions identical of each class and they said they experimented with that with witch/wizard and they said it took them same amount of time to design identical classes as slightly different ones.

People have been asking for opposite gender variants of all the classes since the game released. Ranger male variant has been pretty much at the forefront of that request because they teased it back when the game originally came out.

So I’ve been “playing” this game pretty much every day for the past six months; I log in, do some fishing/gathering and maybe some dailies, then AFK fish for a while. It occured to me recently that I will never ever be able to PvP at a competitive level unless I dedicate my life solely to BDO and spend hundreds of £££.

This game really has the makings of a next gen mmo; The graphics are insanely good for an mmo, the combat is almost like a single player game and there is a level of depth unmatched by most other games of its kind. With some proper PvE content and a fair and balanced PvP system, I reckon that this game could topple WoW; instead we get this pay to win garbage with no sign of change on the horizon, how sad.

Exactly how I feel. On their own I could overlook the PvP or P2W but together its just too much to play the game at any high level for me.

I think it’s a matter of the time frame in which you want to get there. I’m sitting at 250+ AP and I certainly have spent most of my time AFK and focused on lifeskills but it took actual years to get there playing at my own pace. I don’t buy Artisans and certainly won’t melt costumes. However if you wanted to get there faster, yes you could grind your eyeballs out and swipe that card.

so torn. I already own the game but I quit over the overt P2W nonsense as well as being annoyed by PvP encroaching on my gameplay. I get excited hearing about the archer and then quickly depressed that those problems I hated are still around and apparently even bigger from what I hear.

I know what you mean. I did come back to BDO however. Basically, I’m back for the gameplay. I’m avoiding the gear grind altogether and just playing alts, gathering, crafting, and leveling new classes.

Playing in that manner a little bit each day has been very enjoyable.

This is basically what I discovered back in 2016 after I initially quit being disappointed in the Musa release. Just came back to do my own thing at my own pace and I’ve enjoyed the game immensely since then.

u get a 1 loyalty cost character slot right now. use that and make an archer for free. you can play it to 50 without any pvp whatsoever and then quit again. piece of cake.

Haven’t played this for almost a year but I’m once again really interested in this title so maybe someone can answer this quick question: Did it get better or worse within the last year?

Reader
Arktouros

It depends on what you mean by better or worse specifically what problems you had with the game.

From a cash shop perspective they’ve dropped all pretense of avoiding p2w in the western version and just sync’d us up to the KR version of the cash shop. You can now 100% p2w and buy costumes and melt them for cronstones and make enhancement attempts. You semi regularly see people spam PEN attempts 10 attempts deep (each attempt is about $130 or about 1.3bn in silver). Probably the biggest kick in the balls on this one is their absurd justification in adding it.

From a game perspective they kinda dicked over game balance earlier this year. First they introduced AP scaling (more AP = even more damage) then added the renown system which added even more AP for having higher AP as well as giving you damage reduction (DR). This obliterated evasion and made it so there was an immense gear gap in PvP (more than before). They also overhauled all the CC systems removing much of the game’s CC and protections which left some classes screwed and others just absurdly strong. So winner or lose there depends mostly on what class you play and how good your gear was. Since then they’ve announced they will be removing the Renown system so who knows how things will end up after that.

They’ve also made some huge quality of life improvements over all and in general people think the game is largely moving in a positive direction but there have been huge fuck ups and missteps that have caused a lot of people to just quit.

Haven’t played in 2 years, it sounds like it’s still the same. There is a cultural gap in philosophy in what people think would make this game succeed. It’s got all the graphical prowess and combat mechanics to be the most successful MMORPG. If you’ve played it, you can easily argue nothing comes close.

While it does other things well, it’s ecominics, RNG, P2W aspects make it difficult to stay motivated. Asia creates stunning visuals and system ideas, better than the West at times. But It kills its longevity with unneeded monetization practices and grinding tactics when they could easily keep people playing and buying RMT with is cosmetics and simple convience items.

Reader
Arktouros

The thing is the game is already wildly successful. There’s tons of population across all the game instances. There’s really no channel that feels so dead you stop seeing people going about and doing things. Their quarterly reports are basically astounding. The game is barely like it was 2 years ago except in the broadest sense.

The fact is there’s so many gamers out there it’s unlikely you’re going to please a majority of them, let alone all of them. What will take BDO down isn’t RNG or P2W it’s simply a lack of new progression to work on. There’s just so many times you can run in the same circle killing the same things to work on the same low chance of success. Things like Awakening, Abolutes, and then latest Caphras bought them a bit of time but they need to come up with something more than what they have been. Drieghan just came out and it’s like oh boy, few more sub par grind spots. Neat. The new area they showing seems to be more of that same. That’s the kind of thing that will kill a game like this.

I’m excited to see a male class added and the battle royale actually sounds fun.

Might give it a try been waiting for the male Archer class before starting things game .

I’m actually reasonably excited for this class release. The last few have been just snoozefest melee train. Finally new class with different play style.
