The Daily Grind: Which MMO decorates the best for the holidays?

11

Like some of you, I am really into decorating for the holidays. Not Clark Griswold-drain-the-Chicago-power-grid crazy, but I love transforming my environment into something festive and colorful for Christmas. Likewise, it’s great to see this happening in MMORPGs as well, because holiday decorations and a healthy dollop of snow frosting makes me feel cozy and happy when I play.

But not all MMOs decorate alike, of course. Some barely do anything, while others enlist Martha Stewart and her Royal Minions to give the game a top-down makeover. For today’s discussion, give a shoutout to whichever MMO does Christmas (FaeYuleStarlightWintermas) decorations the best! And pictures… pictures are a plus. Pictures mean you win the comments.

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Any discussion of MMO holiday festivities without LotRO is incomplete. Its event feels openly Christmasy, with a Dickensian story about an exploitive mayor mistreating the poor. And the Hobbit Theater is a constant delight.

And, yes, the whole zone is just *lovely.*

I enjoy the immersive atmosphere of GW2’s holidays. The creators have really captured the spirit in not only atmosphere, but in content as well. BDO definitely takes a close 2nd and the only reason it wasn’t first is that I hate competing with a bunch of other players for present drops. That goes so against the spirit of Christmas, IMO, and I hate it! :)

Everquest 2 because of the housing decorations you can get via crafting and quests.

I’ll have to find which of the MMO’s I play have the least intrusive…because most have it so that they rub your face in it. /bleh

I was going to vote FFXIV mostly for that reason. I like that events are small and out of the way, and the decorations themselves tend to be fairly tasteful.

Black Desert Online is absolutely the best at winter holiday scenery, decorations, activities and general seasonal warm-and-fuzziness. I love it so much, from the small towns to the perfect MMO city that is Calpheon, it is SO worth seeing even if you don’t really play the game. BDO can be a toxic wasteland decorated with Pepe banners, but during the winter holidays it is pure magic.

What I like best about the holidays in BDO is they actually semi update their game world dynamically as well. Like rain turns to snow and there’s actual snow accumulation on the ground. You can hear your foot steps as you crunch into said snow on the ground.

Yes! It’s the best that I’ve ever seen. The snow starts softly and organically, and if you sit still it accumulates on your shoulders and the back of your mount. So gorgeous. :D

I don’t know if it’s the best, but my favorite and least out-of-place was LOTRO.

Yep. I wouldn’t say they decorate the best, but Winter-home is a fun holiday escape, and the barter rewards got pretty good last year. Looking forward to paying it another visit this year.

I can’t say I pay enough attention to notice. I dislike seasonal events in MMOs, after all, and the only reason I tend to like them in offline games is because I often can use cheats or mods to trigger them whenever I please.
