Ultima Online’s Raph Koster says Fortnite is more like an MMO than we might think

It’s like people are discovering MMOs all over again.

Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies creator Raph Koster recently expressed amusement at the culture and commentary swirling around the incredibly popular Fortnite. After reading an article published on Medium about the socialization and experimentation that goes on in the battle royale title, Koster made the assertion that “Fortnite is like an MMO.”

As conversations progressed on Twitter about the social virtual space that Fortnite has become, especially for teens, Koster was quick to note how people are drawing parallels to older MMOs. “You can tell how long the commenter has been on the internet based on their reply in this thread,” he quipped. “It’s Ready Player One, but League, but Minecraft, but Second Life, but Habbo, but WoW, but EverQuest, but IRC, but MUDs!”

Welcome to the genre, folks! Everything old is new again.

To be fair the term “MMO” has been stretched so far as to be meaningless. It used to be shorthand for something like an MMORPG with a persistent shared world, but now it seems to mean any sort of online game with a chat lobby and some sort of player interaction. If World of Tanks gets covered as an MMO, I don’t see why Fortnite shouldn’t.

Also, Raph seems to be able to find the MMO-ishness in every online game. It is his gift and/or curse.

Well 1st April is still pretty far away … Fortnite an MMO …. what is next? FIFA is mmorpg?

That’s the dumbest statement I’ve heard in a while. This guy may have helped create some iconic games, but he shouldn’t be saying such dumb shit.

Fortshyte is far from an MMO, it’s far from a game even. Battle Shityale are not games, they are like the survival sandbox games before them – games about nothing – no goal, no direction, no gameplay, just asset engine sumulators.

Raph’s turning into a crank, now.

Yeah and Fortnite should be focusing on PVE more than PVP, but they’re not.

The only remotely MMO aspect of the game is its “meta-story” that keeps changing the map, and even that is shaky at best.

If you can’t differentiate from them, join them.

Even if you are a gankbox.

Yeah, but it’s not.

I thought about some elaborate answer, but I think your reply covers it :D

If that is the case then I am mighty happy I got to discover MMORPGs back when they were “literally” MMORPGs rather than something “like them” :P

Unless we’re talking about MMO-sans-RPG, in which case my interest drops below the point of relevance and I will dignifiedly retreat to whence I came from
