It’s like people are discovering MMOs all over again.
Ultima Online and Star Wars Galaxies creator Raph Koster recently expressed amusement at the culture and commentary swirling around the incredibly popular Fortnite. After reading an article published on Medium about the socialization and experimentation that goes on in the battle royale title, Koster made the assertion that “Fortnite is like an MMO.”
As conversations progressed on Twitter about the social virtual space that Fortnite has become, especially for teens, Koster was quick to note how people are drawing parallels to older MMOs. “You can tell how long the commenter has been on the internet based on their reply in this thread,” he quipped. “It’s Ready Player One, but League, but Minecraft, but Second Life, but Habbo, but WoW, but EverQuest, but IRC, but MUDs!”
