Hellgate London’s latest incarnation has finally added Tokyo

16

When Hellgate London relaunched for like the 500th time a month ago on Steam, probably the biggest criticism, other than the fact that it’s missing the multiplayer component that made it worth playing in the first place, was that the Tokyo content was delayed over “internal circumstances.” But it’s in now, so if you for some reason bought this (again), you’re getting a bit more bang for your 13 bucks.

“We are thrilled to announce that Tokyo Main quest is finally available!” T3 Entertainment and HanbitSoft say. “Tokyo content brings new maps, dungeons and, of course, new items! In addition to the main update we added some improvements that we hope will help you in your adventure!”

There are new buyables in the game now too, including an inventory bag, a parts pack, a mod socket expander, and a few other bits and bobs for crafting.

Wake me up when they at least add co-op to this once fully multiplayer game.

As someone who has missed EVERY iteration of this boat. Is it worth picking up? How does it play?

Dated, but still fun.

Wait for some discount like $5 or below, otherwise not worth it.

I think its really funny how people are screaming for MP. The game shut down because when it was MP hardly anyone played it. That’s why they brought it back as SP. I played the MP global of this game from the beginning till it shut down. I was lucky to see two other players in a week. The in-game chat was dead and if someone did chat it wasn’t in English. A least I can now play it without worrying it will get shut down again.

Well, no one was going to PAY to play MP & sure as shit no one was going to feed money into Hanabit’s hacked in cash shop.

Why is this game a b2p?

Because it’s a singleplayer game I guess.

Yeah, I was bummed out when their FAQ said there wasn’t going to be any MP.

I had thought that battlenet style privately hosted MP servers would be coming as part of Tokyo, but it looks like that is not at all on the table. I’m guessing that trying to get Hanabit to update the contract and green light a MP patch is why it was delayed. But the good news is that we get all of the CS stuff for in game money & nothing is gimped to put it behind a paywall.

I remember playing it when it was free and it wasn’t worth the cost then. Worst boss battles ever.

Well, the current iteration is Single Player, so it doesn’t actually belong here that much. Not many people would send in tips about a single player game to a multiplayer game web site :P

*shrug*

This game is still a part of MMO history & a long dead / repeatedly failed MMO getting resurrected as a single player title is still news.

Plus, there used to be a MP mod project for the Disk version of the game that added private server support, so there is a possibility that it can be unofficially done at some point.

Yeah, there was an early-stage emu getting set up a while back ago. I wonder how it’s doing now.

I wish Hanbitsoft would put up an official multiplayer server, though. Hellgate through all its ups and downs is always my closet gaming fav! I’ve bought it every time it’s come back, and I still have my original disks. ;)

Was! Was a part of MMO history. But this isn’t really that game. Still, the MMO genre is in a drought so bad a single player vasectomy of a game merits regular articles here.
