Wildcard’s new pirate MMO Atlas has been delayed yet again

If you’ve been refreshing Atlas’ Steam page all day today (guilty), you might have noticed that it didn’t actually launch into early access as planned. That’s because it’s been delayed a few more days, according to Wildcard’s Twitter feed this evening.

In fact, that’s the second delay for the game since it was announced just two weeks ago. It was originally planned to launch on the 13th, but Wildcard pushed it to the 19th, saying it wanted to “give the team more time to run through this massive game’s extensive content.”

The company did not explain the reason for this delay in its latest Twitter announcement, but it does say the game will now hit early access on December 21st, which… well, we’re feeling sorry for the engineers who thought they’d be getting time off for Christmas right now.

On the upside, Wildcard pumped out a new gameplay trailer, so that ought to keep everyone occupied for *checks notes* 3 minutes and 45 seconds.

Better late than a poor first impression. Better trailer.
I just hope at least they have the 3rd person view like Ark.

As the devs at Origin used to say, a game is only late until it releases; a bad game is forever bad.

Until Origin was purchased and killed off by EA, where management seems to practice the exact opposite.

Sweet Jebus, Just delay it til January and apologize.

Meh, I’m calling this game dead on arrival.

I’ll reiterate my prediction from yesterday talking with friends. They’ll release it on Friday, then send all their devs home for the Holidays until the first week of January.

Oh wow… I just watched the gameplay video.

The rowboat that ‘leaps’ forward every time the characters in it row. The choppy combat/walking animations. The swimmer who is bobbing in the water at waist height (um, that’s not how physics work…). Every action seems to be one at a time instead of a fluid string of actions. I get it’s early access, but dayum.

So, 2 questions for those still hyped:
1) If this is the amount of care and forethought they put into a MARKETING video, how much care does one expect them to put into the game?

2) If the animations are this janky on a closed server being used to make above-mentioned marketing video… how do you suppose they’ll be with 40,000 players?

*warms up the defense cannon*

But this is early access!
It will all be fixed in beta!
If they optimize and fix animations now, updates will only break them again!
You just don’t understand game development!
Your computer is not good enough to watch the video properly!

:P

I would totally give them the Early Access bye if their track record on that wasn’t already so heavily tarnished.

The animations definitely look bad but I don’t think that they will become any worse with more players. Also bad animations are something that I can live with if everything else is fine. Of course I don’t expect everything else to be fine either.

I sure hope the game devs don’t read this thread. Unbelievable negativity.

The only thing the actual developers are probably guilty of is working for managers who don’t set and keep to reasonable goals. Who push things before they are ready and ask the developers to do things above and beyond their skillsets just because the people in charge want to make big shiny promises.

Wow, they really shouldn’t have released that video…

Is this delayed launch ,an actual launch on an early access launch ?

Just as well they didn’t launch actual pirate ships before they were finished , they would sink .

It is a delayed early access “launch”.

It’s a delayed early access holiday cash grab.

I can’t help it but this mmo really does not look appealing to me. It just looks like a clusterf*** of everything and nothing. in my opinion I just cannot see this being something I would play personally but I do know plenty of people that want to try this.

I do hope the game is a success and is good for it’s players, and if so it should be celebrated.
