ZeniMax says 2019 will be a ‘huge year for The Elder Scrolls Online’

Elder Scrolls Online Creative Director Rich Lambert has a letter up for the game’s community today, complete with a recap of the game’s content and community in 2018 and a big ol’ thank you for everyone who made it happen. But of course, you read these things not for the hugs but for the tea. Lambert brought you but a dribble.

“2019 is almost upon us, and it’s going to be a huge year for The Elder Scrolls Online,” he writes. “I can’t say too much just yet, and it is incredibly difficult to have to hold back details, but ESO will be 5 years old next year – a huge milestone for us and the community! As such, next year’s story and adventure will be something truly special for all Elder Scrolls Online players. We are so excited to be able to share it with you soon, and we can’t wait to see how you all put all the pieces together starting early next year.”

For comparison’s sake, ZeniMax announced Morrowind in January of 2017 and Summerset in March of 2018, so if Lambert’s tease is indeed for the next big game chapter, we’ll probably be hearing about it sooner rather than later. Got any speculation for where? I’ve got my fingers crossed for Hammerfell, always.

Can’t wait to see what happens in ESO for 2019. I’m still having a blast with it after all these years (5!) and it just keeps getting better.

I wish for 3 things:

1. Make combat enjoyable
2. Reduce loading times even more
3. Increase performance on older hardware

Probably Cats, according to the dataminers.

My ESO wishlist would be to add a way to block DLC dungeons when you select a random. The difficulty level of DLC dungeons is extremely harder than regular ones which lead to many failed random groups. I purposely do not subscribe just so that I do not get DLC dungeons.
They should also fix the fake tank problem where anyone can just skip the queue as a dps and show up in the group with no tanking skills or gear whatsoever. But I think due to how the game is designed with its open skills there is no fix for that since there is no actual “tank class”.
Which is another weird thing about ESO. They like to say that any class can perform any role, which technically is true, but unless you are a Dragon Knight tank, you are severely handicapped and cannot do the hardest content. They even went so far as to completely nerf and destroy Nightblade tanks but still claim every class can tank.

Hmm. You’ll forgive me if I’m a little gun-shy but, yeah, every dev roadmap for the upcoming year is “truly special” isn’t it?

You will have to provide details for me to get excited. And, since you are part of the Bethesda family, prove the content will be as bug-free as possible.

It’s going to have to be good, otherwise my Summer 2019 sub money is going to be going to WoW Classic.

I think they can see in the tea leaves that they are going to have to up their game.

I tried to love this game so hard, and I failed unfortunately. It’s a TES game (and I am a huge fan), it has wonderful quests, rich and deep world, combat is fun. But animations are incredibly clunky, and it ruins everything for me :(

A complete combat revamp and a significant amount of attention to the thieving system followed by the ability to turn other players off entirely in your game world would be the only thing that could get me to come back and spend more money on this game.

I’d settle for a solo setting on delves

Skyrim is this way ->

Lol I never left.

However, skyrim doesn’t have the ability to go to all the amazing locations eso has. Im not at fault for enjoying the es universe and wanting to experience it. As much as I complain about the game, there is a lot to like. I just find the things highlighted above are what keep me from logging in over other MMOs

Reader

That’s fair. I honestly hope that the new ES game is truly everything that the ES fans want. Because then you guys get to enjoy the game you wanted, and we get to enjoy the MMO we want. It’s a win-win!

I wished it was on Akavir or the summerset isles tbh hammerfell seems kinda boring

The delves are already solo. You mean the group dungeons, the trials?

If you are talking about the normal delves then they are solo already, if you are talking about dungeons like Fungal Grotto , then I’d love a story mode for them.

Reader

I know delves are soloable but there are still random people running around spamming aedric spear on everything

And ?

It sucks?

Nope, not in the slightest. Get in, kill the boss, collect any books in there, get the skyward, leave.

Reader
Bannex

That’s exactly what’s wrong with the delves. Sprint through, wait in a circle for boss to spawn, spam, leave.

I’m still enjoying the game having only played a little over a year but without a doubt, yes, they need to make combat more exciting.

The only thing that would bring me back at this point is if they actually added some real form of end game progression. I hated the fact that once you had the item set(s) that were optimal for your class/build, there was no reason to ever run dungeons or raids anymore (for progressions sake). Even the new raid often didnt have gear you needed if you already had your optimal gear because the game doesnt have vertically scaling loot.

Oh that and fixing it so that large scale PvP didnt lag any time more than 10 players were in the same location fighting.

I actually play ESO because it does not have a gear treadmill. I got so tired and burnt out trying to keep up with the never ending gear treadmill in WoW. It is so nice to not have to replace all of my gear every couple of months to the latest ilevel. There are lots of other ways to progress in ESO even with gear. It takes lots of work to get gold quality and the right traits for every gear slot even harder if the gear you want is a dropped random set. Now with JC it takes even longer to get all gold jewelery. Then there is the CP system. So you don’t need a gear treadmill for progression.

This PvP part is nearly impossible to do with enough players around. But lowering settings helps there, of course.
But if you have cleared all trials on their hardest difficulties… congratulations.

What I would like to see is the combat animations updates to include specific moves for those using maces and mauls. Currently animations are only for bladed weapons with some abilities making a stabbing motion with a mace.

Secondly: Fix. Your. Events. I want to like the events, but I have run into bug after bug after bug. Added to this the feathers for the Indrik mount being tied to the event where if you miss some time (due to the bugs) that you are basically frozen out of the ability to get the mount. I would have no issue with the “you need to complete the event” to get the mount, but the Skull drops at Halloween, and the Dauntless group bug both made completing those a nightmare for players. This needs to be fixed.

Lastly, and part of the events topic, is that events need to look at all the different styles of play. Healers who do not attack certain bosses, but are still providing a needed service to the Tanks and DPS types, are often frozen out of the rewards because of their playstyle. In this day and age, surely there can be a way to make sure that healers are justly compensated for their work instead of relying on “who did the most damage?” as a metric.

Improvements in combat, yes. Please!

I can’t deny that this game has come a tremendous way, and i believe I’ve had about 3 real goes at it.

One at launch for a few months, the revamp where it all scaled a few months, and some other time in there at some point, all 3 times it clicked, enjoyed, but then something goes off like a switch and i simply stop playing all together? Usually i’d just leave my sub running as i know i’ll be back, but even stopped the sub only a short time ago too, as in i think i’m done for good with this game.

But omg 2019 is going to be a huge year somehow still does not excite me, but…
“Improvements in combat, yes. Please!” that excites me, make it freaking challenging. The serious lack of challenge, is what gets to me after awhile.

If most of the players like it easy mode then don’t change it, just not a game for me then.

Heh. I followed the same path. Played beta, and was nonplussed. Played several months after that and was happy to see progress but didn’t stay long because as you mention combat isn’t much of a challenge and it is wonky.

Played again after that, and didn’t find much had changed.

So, meh, 2019…
