Make My MMO: Star Citizen’s big investment, Ashes of Creation’s Apocalypse

8

This week week in MMO crowdfunding, Star Citizen studio Cloud Imperium ended the year with a bang, offsetting the reveal of its Squadron 42 roadmap – and the hefty delay of its beta into at least 2020 – with the revelation that it’s picked up $46M in outside investment to see S42 through marketing and completion.

Ashes of Creation launched its Apocalypse battle royale standalone game too. It’s free-to-play, so you can jump right in. We did, chiefly to sort out where the real MMO stands in terms of visual appeals and combat – here’s what we think so far.

Meanwhile, City of Titans delayed Issue 0, Pathfinder Online is still alive, The Repopulation actually pushed out an update, Prosperous Universe hit early access, Legends of Aria prepped a new patch, Shroud of the Avatar is running a skill promo and pushed out R61, Temtem got an alpha update, and Elite Dangerous released Beyond Chapter Four, though it hasn’t been entirely smooth sailing.

Finally, we handed out our award for best indie or crowdfunded MMO of the year – congrats to Project Gorgon for unanimously taking that honor!

Read on for more on what’s been up with MMO crowdfunding over the last couple of weeks and our roundup of all the crowdfunded MMOs we’re following!

So at minimum, SC is going to need another $100 million to get to the end of 2020…

$300 million for Sq42 to see the light of day, and then god knows how much more for SC to reach a proper release.

What a shitshow.

its quite a lot of money for sure. i could imagine an EA exec having a heart attack if one of its studios was costing that much money per year nevermind the amount. so baically upto and including 2017 they brought in about 207mill with expenses of about 193mill. yah definitely not enough in reserve to finish squadron at least

…not.

Very good chance that this next year (2019), Star Citizen becomes the most expensive game ever (in development cost). And it’s fairly obvious why.

Bot SWToR and GTAV cost more by a fairly large margin if you include the Marketing costs as people are doing here with SC.

nah gta 5 was about $250mill all in

Oh please. That’s hardly the case AT ALL. Hyperbole serves no one here. The $46 million is for an actual main stream marketing campaign only because CR wanted to keep his promise that all money raised via crowdfunding goes strictly into the actual development costs. You can read it direct from the horse’s mouth here:

Star Citizen interview — Why Chris Roberts raised another $46 million to finish sci-fi universe

Methinks someone’s worried that if SC is successful, a certain space game that’s been accused of having a lot of procedurally generated content – but little depth; and who’s latest addition has a big more issues than expected (besides also being late itself) might start to suffer a loss of players.

SC delayed?
Hm, didn’t see that coming…
