World of Warcraft fan creates a greatly improved Wrathgate cinematic

While Blizzard is undeniably masterful in its creation and use of cinematic cutscenes to propel the plot of World of Warcraft today, back in its second expansion such interludes were both rare and somewhat basic. Perhaps the most famous of these was Wrathgate, a Wrath of the Lich King event that saw the Forsaken, Scourge, Horde, and Alliance clash before an epic plot twist occurred.

Of course, the original cinematic hasn’t aged as gracefully, especially when compared with more modern scenes. This is why YouTuber IKedit remastered the scene with WoW tools, creating a much more improved (and watchable) version. Check it out after the break and let us know what you think in the comments!

Man, that still gives me chills over ten years later. It was such a cool surprise to see an in-game cinematic like that back then, being the first of its kind. And the scene was so well done between getting us pumped up for a confrontation with the Lich King, suddenly going “oh sh…” when Saurfang Jr gets wrekt, and then the mix of “wait wtf” and “hell yeah, for the Forsaken!” reactions followed by the feels of seeing all the Horde/Alliance soldiers die before the Blight.

The quality of course has certainly rose since then but that one will always hold a special place in my memories of WoW.

They cut the pink Gnome out in the first part. Most disappointed. :(

Not sure how I feel about those super high detailed textures on everything that adds tons of “noise” to material textures like skin and different kinds of metals that aren’t a part of the original or current WoW models. I don’t know what the process of rendering these models is like for machinima, but I assume that stuff isn’t vanilla because it doesn’t fit with the in-game art style.

That’s pretty nitpicky, really, but otherwise it is almost frame for frame accurate to the original. That stuff was mindblowing to see in a MMO back in the day XD

Watched this today before taking my shower. Pretty good. Better than Blizzard, for sure.

that’s ironic, because cutscenes that look 100x better than the actual game is pretty much what Blizzard does.

Though I doubt it’ll happen, I hope that they remaster more than just the RoC intro in Reforged.

Would be great to see them redo it with modern graphics/techniques/etc. that they’ve gotten significantly better with.

The infernal in the old trailer looks way more faithful to how it is.

I like Reforged a lot, but i hope they don’t change the concept of the units.
