Leaderboard: Will you be playing PlanetSide Arena?

Last month, Daybreak officially revealed its first truly new game in several years: PlanetSide Arena, a large-scale battle royale title set in the venerable PlanetSide franchise. It’s so big it frankly needs a new subgenre because it’s not an MMORPG, but it’s also massive in a way most battle royales aren’t – how about MMOBR?

Anyway, as we’ve discussed both on the podcast and in our comments, it seems as if there’s an audience mismatch here. The PlanetSide 2 community doesn’t seem too enthusiastic, even though it’s been assured that Daybreak won’t abandon that game. MMO players who know Daybreak backward and forward don’t seem all that impressed. And it might be hard to tear actual battle royale fans from the behemoth games they’re already playing.

How about you – will you be playing PlanetSide Arena?

Free? Maybe, but probably not. Paid? Almost certainly not.

If it was free, I might check it out. I enjoy Planetside, but I’m not shelling out any amount of money for a Battle Royale game made using assets from five years ago.

Nope. Didn’t like Planetside 2 as much as I thought I would, don’t like Battle Royale much, and don’t trust Daybreak at all so it’s quite the trifecta.

The poll options are a bit… extreme. I don’t hate battle royale, I have more of a mild dislike for it. But that’s still enough reason not to play. I just have no interest in it.

Nope, I played Planetside 2 and it was fun for a while, but that fun was very short-lived (due to various reasons, including the engine performance and the game balance/map design) and I don’t see how anything will change by making same game smaller and re-releasing it again on same exact engine.

Supposedly it’s meant to be running off DirectX11 this time which is supposedly meant to improve things.

They could announce a game that is everything I want in an MMO and I wouldn’t give them a dime until its been out for a few months.

Etch-a-Sketch is my primary gaming platform these days. The original (and best) tablet.

Oh look another game that isn’t part of the all access pass they keep trying to sell. I got a lifetime sub from back when DCUO was first released, still waiting to get some value out of it. Right now you can choose between two relics from the past, a niche shooter (that will probably still be better then the battle royal), and a meh MMO with pretty bad voice acting.

As someone who enjoyed playing planetside 1 and 2, i would give it a shot if i actually liked the BR genre in spite of DBG’s reputation.
