I, like 99.99% of the world’s population, loves free swag. I love me dorky t-shirts I’ll never wear, I crave stress balls that pop after two good squeezes, and I’ll never say no if an MMO studio wants to wing some digital goodies my way. Obviously, I would make an excellent politician.
Free giveaways in MMOs always pulls me in, even if I’m not playing the game at the time. Getting free starships in Star Trek Online or cute Blizzard bear cubs in World of Warcraft kind of makes my day, even if everyone else is getting the same thing too. Sometimes the free gift came not from the studio, but from other generous players who spread joy by giving cool stuff to lowbies.
