Ashes of Creation kicks off another Apocalypse beta, previews castle siege and classes

During last night’s much-heralded Ashes of Creation livestream, Intrepid Studios demoed a trailer previewing its castle siege mode. Hey, that ought to perk up those of you grumpy about battle royale – this mode is much more MMOsy. “Trebuchets, ballistae, catapults, siege towers, giant balls of fire and broken castle walls… It’s gonna be a good time, right?” the studio says.

“We also revealed the classes that are coming to the same with the Castle Siege update. There are six in total, spread across three disciplines – Warrior, DPS, and Support. The Guardian and Weaponmaster are your Warrior classes, while the Archwizard and the Hawkeye are ranged DPS experts, and finally the High Priest and Engineer will be your support classes. We can’t wait to show them off in action very soon.”

Apocalypse is currently in the middle of an open beta weekend, for which you can still sign up to take part if you’re so inclined.

To get me to sub in this day and age would take a lot. A sub means I feel more compelled to play your game regularly because I was conditioned by other games in the early 2000’s to do so.

Now I can play BDO and GW2 and ESO and if I don’t login for 2 months I don’t care and that type of freedom is worth so much more than a sub.

Where is a video on the one really interesting feature Ashes is supposed to have, node evolution?

For being the feature they trot out as a counterpoint to people wanting proper PvE its very non-existent so far.

Just a few googles and you could find a couple of live streams on that exact thing.

It’s also not at the forefront of this testing phase because they literally said the next 6 months (2 or 3 months ago) would be completely dedicated to combat evaluation and combat systems.

and the fact they are doing it with a purely PvP mode is quite telling. Anyone who plans on playing AoC for a good PvE experience is going to be very disappointed.

Its the fastest way to test combat. Or should they spend tons of time on developing mechanics for PvE mobs and bosses and AI to test something completely different in combat?

That’s just backwards

@Vunak23 –

Have they explained how the specific steps and stages of the MMO’s overall combat will be tested by the specific abilities and combat loops of the PvP test?

Cause I’ve heard people say ‘the BR will give data for the MMORPG’ but I’ve never seen anyone explain how that will happen.

And I’ve never seen someone explain how the nitty-gritty parts of combat for BR mode will translate to better nitty-gritty MMO parts of combat.

Any combat data they could get form it to translate to PvE would be minimal unless they designed it poorly and just had ZERO idea how it would work before putting it out. Anyone who has played MMO’s can tell you how dramatically PvP and PvE combat ends up working. If they do end up using a lot of the same mechanics then one or the other suffers greatly. If they do that here i’m sure you can guess which one it would be for AoC.

Best case scenario its just an excuse to keep the PvE and even more traditional PvP’ers from flipping out over another BR cash grab while they make the rest of the game. If it is providing them with a surplus of combat information this game is in bad shape down the line and people will be testing updates and expansions ‘on release day’

My hope is they get data about the fundamentals, basics of how their netcode works, how movement works, how movement and combat animations feel, how second-to-second transitions between combat parts feel, how ‘tight’ combat feels.

That’s the spine.

Stuff like combat mechanics (use x ability in y situation) and win conditions are the flesh and skin, but it’s still possible to get spine-level data that’s actually useful from a BR mode.

Whether they actually use the BR mode for that is another question – but I suggest it’s at least possible.

It really isn’t.

You would test it in a controlled environment (the exact opposite of what BR is heh) and go through all the attacks and defenses. All you would need is some random world object, human model in T-pose would do if they even bother assigning it a model and tell it to do X ability a lot against a test character or another object and go through the output.

At best this is testing server hardware, the cash shop, some player feedback on ‘look and feel’ and a safety net of any problems they didn’t catch depending how good their QA is.

You better HOPE that ‘testing combat’ line is just a way to justify this BR ‘cash-in’ because if this is providing them with a ton of combat data they didn’t already have then they are really bad at developing video game combat.

Hmm. Ok. So if you can do a BR beta, why not a siege beta? Two teams, siege weapons, and lots of smiles.

Oh, it wouldn’t be as easy to generate as BR but a slice of siege scenario would go a long way in bringing more players into the fold, no?

That is literally exactly what they plan on doing. Its just not ready yet. But Castle Siege is the next phase of testing.

That is why the video is titled; Ashes of Creation Apocalypse Siege Maps Preview

Ah, ok. Good to know. Well, then. I look forward to other beta modules!

Basically two and a half minutes of siege weapons from different angles…not really sure what the point is. How our characters interact with these weapons, etc. would have been more interesting. It’s pretty though.

Agreed. While I don’t mind the assets and concept views, with no commentary or interaction, it says that castle siege is still ways off from being implemented.

It probably wo t ever been integrated. The MMO is doa.

Heh. Yup. It was basically a music video.
