Cyberpunk 2077 creative director joins Blizzard to work on an unannounced new project

A sudden shake-up has occurred at Cyberpunk 2077 developer CD Projekt Red, as it appears that the game’s creative director, Sebastian Stępień, has left the studio to join the team at Blizzard.

According to Stępień’s LinkedIn profile, his new position at Blizzard is creative director for an unnamed project, so there’s really no telling what exactly he’ll be working on. It’s also unclear what this news means for Cyberpunk 2077, if it means anything at all — after all, the game’s far along in the development process, so it could simply be the case that Stępień’s work is done.

Stępień’s work with CD Projekt Red spanned from the original Witcher game, on which he worked as a dialogue writer, to The Witcher III, his first game as creative director. And of course, he was, until this month, the creative director for Cyberpunk 2077, which is tentatively slated (or at least expected) to release sometime this year.

He probably just got tired of working hard and releasing a good product. Now that he has joined Blizzard, all of that pressure is off.

Cyberpunk is almost finished and any work left that would be applicable to someone with his skill sets would likely go to someone else in his team. I don’t see this as “jumping ship” and more of a “getting a headstart” on new beginnings.

The question we should be asking would be is this for a new IP or just Diablo 4.

Diablo is a national obsession here in Poland, so if he’s not working on D4, it will surely be a waste. :D

hmm curious given his current and past work experience in single player RPG’s it makes me wonder if Blizzard is finally interested in taking the plunge into single player narratives.

You need help. Stop crying and find a psychiatrist.

Well, if he is with Blizzard now, its probably because CD Project Red didnt like his pitch for a “Witcher – 2077” mobile game.

To jump ship before the project you are in charge of is even out.. is on one hand pretty poor, but I’m guessing the incentives of that job offer were just TOO GOOD to ignore :)

OR he did something really really bad and it is being handled discreetly.

Sorry, I’m not usually a cynic. Heh.

That’s what happens when companies pay localized salaries in post-globalization world. Hopefully, CDP will learn something from this. Like, not trying to extract all the money for shareholders instead of paying (globally) competitive salaries. And it’s not even that pricey considering low cost of living in eastern Europe (no need to compensate $3k/month rent cost per employee).
