Guild Wars 2’s Tournament of Legends and new player-built DX12 addon

The world of Tyria is filled with legends, and next month, Guild Wars 2 players will get the opportunity to fight for a spot in the pantheon in the Tournament of Legends. This PvP event will pit players against one another in a single-elimination 5v5 conquest tournament for honor, glory, and of course extravagant prizes.

Each member of the first-place team will take home his or her choice of “any currently available legendary weapon, excluding Eternity” plus 1,000 gems, 2 Black Lion Claim Tickets, a Permanent Champion’s Rest Pass, a Llama Mini Choice Box, and one of a selection of permanent finishers. That’s quite the haul up for grabs, and even the teams who don’t take the top spot will be walking away with a fine array of loot, the full list of which you can find on the official event page.

And in other GW2 news, Reddit user megai2 has put together a nifty addon that allows the game to make use of DirectX12, providing substantial performance boosts for those with suitable hardware. If you’re curious about how exactly it works, well, you’ll have to check out the post itself, but the long-and-short of it is that it works as a sort of translator that, as the creator puts it, “takes DirectX9 API calls and translates them into DirectX12 API calls.” Either way, if you’ve got the hardware for it, it might be worth giving a go, as tests have shown some pretty impressive performance boosts.

If you’re interested, you can find the post with instructions on how to use the addon here. Do note that the mod was vetted for safety (though not efficacy) by a mod on the subreddit after the sub began accusing it of being malware without evidence. Apps and tweaks like this are not strictly illegal in Guild Wars 2, as long as they’re not cheats; ArenaNet has generally taken a “use at your own risk” attitude, but be aware it’s cracked down on potential cheaters in the past.
