Sea of Thieves tackles crossplay and toxicity in latest dev update

You might be a pirate in Sea of Thieves, but that doesn’t excuse any dastardly behavior shown to other players. According to this week’s developer update video, Rare said that is coming down hard on those who discriminate against or display toxic attitudes toward others.

“When we see excuses or people going, ‘Oh well, this happens in other games,’ that’s nonsense,” said Lead Developer Joe Neate. “That is not an acceptable excuse. Be better!”

Another hot-button issue that Rare is discussing is that of crossplay — more specifically, giving players the options not to cross the boundary between console and PC in order to provide a more level playing field in PvP. Eventually, players will have the option to disable crossplay in the upcoming arena setting as well as the choice to use mouse-and-keyboard on console.

Whenever I see any company talking about handling “toxic behavior ” I think wow, this is the group that’s gonna alter natural human behavior in competitive settings! Holy Toledo! How impressive…

Yeah imagine that! Well, if they succeeded imagine the book sales for the inevitable book and movie deals to follow-

All kidding aside, yeah this is as possible as holding water in your hands.

Eh, I have yet to encounter any severe toxicity in Sea of Thieves. The worst bits have been from players who couldn’t handle being sunk very gracefully. “Wow, you’re so bad, go back to CoD,” he said, as his ship sank below the waterline and fell into the abyss.

Players found to be using emotes in a threatening way will now be banned, swatted and lynched.

That is not an acceptable excuse. Be better!

Or, you know, I won’t.

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Me too! Pirate cosplay has to be fairly common already.

Be better!

Be…best, one might even say.

Is this game better now with regard to having content? I wrote it off initially because it wasn’t even close to what I thought it was going to be and had like zero actual content… seems like that should be a huge priority.

The game has had a huge resurgence of popularity because summit1G started streaming it a few months ago. That one person is directly responsible for a huge uptick in sales. Other major streamers have come on board due to the sandbox nature and decent hit tracking of the game.

Some people have claimed he is toxic. because he owns the ever living shit out of anyone he comes across and sometimes cusses. I think people were happier when they could just pve treasure and never see any other pirates. Now that there are pirates in a pirate game the game suddenly became “toxic”.

The evolution has been a fun watch. I bought it last weekend. – i’m waiting for the reinstall on the 6th to deep dive.

To be fair a pirates themed mmo sandbox is a perfect platform for PVP sandbox because of the nature of pirates themselves too and when a game is named Sea of Thieves, the name suggests its at least to some extent hardcore pvp. On the RP side its hard to imagine a pirate that isnt cussing too. I mean I dont think any players going there didnt know where they got into.

That is why the people complaining are more than a little annoying.

The categorical obstructionism argument? o.O

I’m not making an argument – I’m stating an opinion.

Then a categorical obstructionist opinion then? O.o

Sure I guess. I’ll have to look up what that means though.

Wait wait wait, we can figure this out.

Categorical means explicit or direct. Obstructionism means the practice of deliberately impeding or delaying the course of a process or change.

By breaking this down we can see that these terms don’t really apply to what you had to say. For one your attitude in your reply was more dismissive of the issue as based on Panagiotis’ point the complainers don’t really have good grounds to complain from. For two this isn’t very direct or explicit as in both cases you’re both talking about general behavior and general player that would be attracted.

So really more of a case of misanthropic apathy opinion (IE: People are bastards, you’re not going to make them not bastards, why are we wasting our time on this?)

I’ll let Mr. Eliot explain it…since he came up with it: >.>

Perfect Ten: MMO arguments we need to put down

Yea, sorry, that’s not what those words actually mean.

Thanks Ark :)

Although you added more words for me look up.

*sigh*

anyway, long story short – the toxic behavior barely registers and its a pvp pirate game.

quit your bitchin’ or go play the 100s of other games made for you.

The joking aside over the use of that term…

Nope. While I agree the toxicity might not be caliber one is expecting of this game, I will not buy because it’s Pirate PvP game is should be allowed. That’s entirely unacceptable. And if you don’t like this opinion you know where you can stuff yours. Now we have that mutual distaste of each of our positions out the way, I hope we can get along. <3

“As well as the choice to use mouse and keyboard on console”

Seems a bit redundant to separate console/PC and then go ahead with something like that.

This is why it is important to watch the video before jumping to conclusions. They said that M+K on console will automatically put you in the cross play pool against PC players.
