Gloria Victis updates open-world PvP to target differences in nation strength

Unbalance.

The idea of having three-faction PvP in an MMO is that when one faction is dominating, the two remaining weaker factions can team up to take on the stronger target. Unfortunately, Gloria Victis was running into a problem wherein the two stronger nations would team up and kick the weaker faction, which made things more unbalanced. The latest patch is aimed at fixing that problem with the new Frontline Battles, which can only spawn between the strongest factions. Siege events are also more limited in who can attack and server condition is taken into account before these battles start.

Other improvements in the patch aside from bug fixes include rolling the Rite and River Outpost world events together as player-triggered events, updating the Volcano event, and disabling friendly fire from siege weapons to avoid people making fake alts to turn siege weapons against the defenders. The full list of changes is available now, so give it a readthrough and see if the open-world situation feels more organic after the change.

That two strong factions are picking on a weak faction says almost all you need to know about humanity…

Welcome to 3 faction PvP, where the most likely thing to happen is meta-game alliances that make the idea about as pointed as a cotton ball.

Sorry, folks, but I don’t believe it will work without some major changes… and at 3 factions I don’t believe there will be enough reason for it to ever work. I could see with at least 5 having balance factors applied.

Of course, factions also tend to split non-PvP players. Which generally means that people find themselves less happy if PvP is not their goal. So there’s a downside to more factions as well.

Gloria Victis is a PvP game

Kinda. It’s a PvPvE game. There are, or were at least, a fair few people who played the other side of it. Whether what they have and have had as a setup counts as anything other than a PvP game was a topic not too long ago, so for a fair few you would be correct… but for others you would not be correct.

They still say they are a PvPvE game, even if the PvE side of that is mostly gutted at this point. Either way, it’s worth noting that, when we talk about faction systems, the two play styles are directly opposed in terms of pros and cons to a multitude of factions.
