One Shots: Time for the chicken dance

52

Ever found yourself suddenly in the midst of a surreal and even hilarious experience in your MMORPG? Delightful surprises is the theme of this column, and Minimalistway certainly found a bit of that when MapleStory threw a chicken dance party.

“I love it when games don’t take themselves seriously, a little bit of goofy does not harm,” Minimalistway said. “A shady NPC asked me to join a competition. I didn’t know what I agreed on and seconds later I’m dancing for chickens!”

Yes, this is a real thing.

So what twists and turns in an MMO story shocked you? Hikari didn’t have to look far for a recent example of this in Guild Wars 2’s newest living world episode.

“Because it’s so new (and so shocking) I don’t want to spoil the ending. I’ll just post this shot taken during the episode,” Hikari said.

I’ll spoil it for you. Something something dragons. It’s always dragons in that game.

Random MMO Fan has another non-spoilery example of this: “The scene which begins with this image in FFXIV. People who played will know exactly why.”

Honestly, I wasn’t expecting the whole Kingdom Hearts crew to appear from a portal and drag the player into a cross-promotional adventure, but that’s the amazing appeal of this MMO!

Or if you like your surprises a bit more mundane yet glitzy, you could just visit the nearest World of Warcraft hoard (not Horde) and do a Scrooge McDuck in all of it.

Utakata had fun with it, at least: “A surprise with class you say? How about a whole Treasure Island’s worth!?”

Reader Xijit is among those having a great time in BioWare’s Anthem demo. Among the Javelins that he showed to us, this one caught my eye for the non-traditional helmet scheme (or lack of a helmet, I should say).

Speaking of looking tough, this week’s screenshot challenge is to show us your character truly meaning business. Maybe it’s a fierce cutscene, a heavy duty outfit, or an action movie pose, but let’s see if you can impress us with your ferocity!

Every week, One Shots shines a spotlight on the best community screenshots from your MMO adventures. If you have a great pic to share, email it to justin@massivelyop.com with the subject “One Shots.” Make sure that the picture is over 880px wide and comes with a description or story!

Gave up on trying to find a way to just upload screenshots directly to the internet and got a USB flash drive: why Sony? Is this some stupid design pact with USB flash drive makers to keep them relevant?

Anyway: more Anthem.

Hard to mean more business than with a Warframe. Need someone stabbed, punched, or slashed? Accept no substitute.

Action movie pose? Well, let’s see… This is the one where me and a certain in-game character are about to smack each other:

For people unfamiliar with game, this is from in-game cutscene which plays similar to the Stormblood’s trailer, at the same exact location:

Still having problems getting my screenshots off my PS4 … I know that most of it is just “wow was the first MMO” type trolling, but for those who are actually interested in how these games can have “Raids:” here is a stream if me doing the Tyrant “Stronghold” in Anthem.

4 battles:

The first one in a single wave, but the fight is divided into 2 zones: the bottom of the hill & then up the hill.

The second one is MUCH harder as it has two waves, very little cover & a ton of gunners and snipers (as well as 4 turrets that will wipe your party if you dont take them down first).

The third one has you spelunking into the caves & dealing with 4 waves, with the 3rd one being a brute fest & the 4th one being an endless wave as you hold the platform while the door to the boss unlocks (stepping off the platform causes the unlock progress to regress & the mobs don’t stop till you unlock the door … Good XP farming though).

and the fourth one is the Raid boss itself: the boss is slow, but can one shot you if you get too close, and likes to spit webbing which grounds you and overheats your engines. The mobs that spawn in are the bigger threat as it is a mix of spitters that overheat you, suicide bomber tanks that pop into pools of acid, and thugs that can stun lock you if you get surrounded.

The general application is that at each battle zone you need to clear mobs while collecting items to shut down the relics at each location … Not exactly the most complicated design, but 90% of all raids are set up exactly the same & you don’t really give a shit about design complexity when your whole team is down & you need to kite 45 mobs to the other side of the map so you have space to res them.

Not my best run: I’m typically the one carrying the team but this time I kept screwing up.

rafael12104

Nah. You did fine, man. It’s situational, and not all runs are the same which is what you were alluding too. The mechanics seem simple until all chaos breaks loose and you are running just to get a few seconds of shield charge. Heh. Been there.

Haven’t tried the Raid in Hardmode. I’m quite happy with normal at the moment. Lol. Thanks for the vid.

what’s this i’m hearing about load screens in the open world in this game?

is it some janky chunk loading shit or legit loading screens?

Xijit
Reader

Xijit

Yes and no: open world is seamless, but when you go into one of the dungeons you get a loading screen. That is because the dungeons are instances & the mobs reset when you exit, so you can run the dungeon over and over again.

The open world map is very open and is designed to give players a space to just aimlessly fuck off. But the game never tries to pretend that it is anything but a lobby shooter with a plot line … Bitching about the loading screens is dumb as fuck. The people trying to snivel about that are really scraping the bottom of the petty-barrel to come up with something to try to condem the game over.

But … par the course for r/GamingCircleJerk.

The game does what it does very well, but that is all that it does: it is not an MMO, or a Witcher 3 type free roam (which also had loading screens), and it also isn’t a single player RPG.

There is basicly no end to the number of gameplay features you could dig up and bitch about how they are not in the game, but you may as well start bitching about how MLP doesn’t have enough Tits and Cocaine.

sounds like something not unlike div1 maybe? not a bad thing.

these people were making it sound like some open world events thing instead of dungeons. but yeah reddit youtuber streamer memes for you.

Very much like The Division, but … Sort of Backwards.

By the middle of Saturday the game was running damn near perfect. I think the servers are off now, otherwise I would say you should give it another go just to get a real feel for how it be.

i’m splitting my gaming time between conan and sc annnnd music production these days. and the alpha didn’t grab me enough to wanna get past what i expected to be at least 15 minutes of dialogue tree stuff and tutorial when i got to the city.

i have plans to play div2 and feeling the squeeze of holiday debt so limiting new game purchases for the moment.

either way, i’m glad you are enjoying it. i wanted to ask you because you know whats up and seem to earnestly enjoy it without overselling it. thanks for the heads up on this one.

PS: It’s seems to me that Mr. Justin like pics of my one Goblin Rogue sitting on piles of useless gold, as this would be the 2nd one hosted for the One Shot gallery. And useless, as in there is no way to interact with it beyond sitting on them…or I would have a screen of her sitting on that 5,000 k bronto mount instead with the amount of gold that’s supposed on that island. /le sigh

Thanks for the plug though, Mr. Justin! <3

As an SWL Dragon player, I approve the statement that it’s always Dragons. :)

Fierce and meaning business? I can do that.

Conan Exiles is always pretty fierce, sometimes more so than usual. (with an unrelated gif to accent my point :) )

And some other shots. Scalding from Champions Online channeling her inner Phoenix

Might as well do Steel Girl from CO as well. Her armors in CoH were much more Rescue/IronMan-esque but when she got portal shot to CO during the CoH cataclysm (shutdown) she had to make due with materials on hand and made a backpack suit.

And what the heck, who says doing a wall grind on an Orochi hoverboard isn’t meaning business? :)

This is Grylls Bear, my new magicka Warden. With him is his attack bear Grills and his pet bear Papa Emeritus III. We are in Fort Zeren, just before I abandoned them all to die, because basically the Pact storyline is everyone else beating the crap out of them.

Here is my Gunner Haliee dealing with some crazy Pot Dogs. For you Nier-ologists out there, that’s a 2B inspired dress, similar to the one soon to be in FFXIV’s YoRHa Apocalypse.

Alternatively, the crimson lotus emote is definitely kick ass! (although a gif would probably do it more justice than a simple screen shot)

Crimson Lotus emote is cool, and if you want it to be animated – you can record your gameplay through something like Nvidia Shadowplay (included with Geforce driver package) then upload it to Gfycat or similar site – this takes like couple of minutes. After that, you’ll get results like:

Some of the coolest screenshots come from cutscenes in many MMOs. This one is no exception where my character is doing some srs recon in FFXIV:

Wow is that legit player hair? Does it animate right??

Reader
Vincent Clark

I think that specific hairstyle was from a design contest winner, but I could be wrong

Reader
Toy Clown

Yes! As Vincent mentioned, it was a winner from a player hair design contest and is obtained from HoH (Heaven on High?) or the marketboard. I saved up for about a month to buy it. I love it! And it does have animation when the character moves, it sort of swings side-to-side and the ends blow in the wind.

Great shot. I really like how game includes your character into all cutscenes and does all animations for it.
