Final Fantasy XIV’s basic edition is free for Twitch Prime users until May

And ANOTHER goddamn thing!

With a new expansion on the way in July and a continual schedule of content updates, you may very well be tempted to try out Final Fantasy XIV. And if you’re a Twitch Prime subscriber, you can do that now without having to pay an additional dime, as the game’s starter edition is available for free until May 3rd. That means access to everything in the base game as well as a free month of subscription, just as a bonus for Twitch subscribers.

Of course, this free edition does not include the game’s two existing expansions, which means that it only can be played up to the end of the base game’s story and does not include subsequent expansion jobs (Dark Knight, Astrologian, Machinist, Samurai, and Red Mage). Still, it’s a free chance to see how the game plays and get invested without additional outlay, so it’s well worth taking advantage of the promotion if you haven’t bought the game before now.

Wonder if I can use it as another alt account to send a friend referral to.

After resubbing a couple days ago I decided to create a new character just to get used to the game again. With the Road to 60 buff I’m already at level 20, but only at the level 14 part of the MSQ. I have one character who hit level 52 as a Warrior, plus she’s started just about everything else, so I’ll continue with her for the most part. But if I decide to commit to a second character I’m going to purchase both a level-up and an ARR MSQ pass.

Normally I’m an altiholic, but there’s just so much story in this game and you can do everything on one character, it’s just not necessary. But I still want a second character.

Why a second character?
I’m not trying to be snarky, truly. But why bother? Altoholism I get, but it’s absolutely COUNTER productive in this game.
You can’t mail stuff to yourself so there’s literally no point in a bank/auction alt. The MSQ is *astonishingly* long and agonizing (from 50 to 51 (the end of ARR) it’s ONE HUNDRED QUESTS) so only a masochist would do that multiple times when you don’t need to.
And then, of course as you mention, you can literally do EVERYTHING on a single character, with the added benefit of the system being all those whacky-class drops that are BOP…you can use them when you finally decide to level that (weird class you never thought you’d level), assuming you can find some place to store all that crap.

You have a good point. I suppose because starting over always has some appeal for me, but all those ARR MSQ quests… I barely got into the first expansion before I put the game down for a few years. Didn’t even get to use my griffon to fly. I’d bought Heavensward and realized just how many quests I had left before I could even get to that content… Yeah.

I logged in for the first time on that character and I was completely overwhelmed by all this stuff she can do. I have all the base Jobs, then Warrior, Ninja, Machinst, Astro, and DK. But none of the other original advanced Jobs yet. Last night I found the Novice’s arena, and that’s helping me get used to things again, as well as get decent gear for the numbers Jobs that are around level 15.

If I do commit to a second character I will get the Level 60 Monk and MSQ finisher. I’m not there yet, though. I’m not even near Stormblood yet, for that matter. The sheer amount of content in this game is incredible.

To concede the point, though, I COMPLETELY understand starting over if you’ve been say, and want that to both recall the story and mechanics; that would be one of the (to me, few) legit reasons to want to do the content a 2nd time.

If I would start over, I’d buy a story skip of ARR and get to HW as that story is solid enough to experience a second time :)

Man, I really wish I liked this game more. It was fine when I tried it, but it didn’t really grab me.

They are pulling out all the stop, no? Nice!

Should just make the base game free and fully functional permanently. Especially since there are two expansions and it requires a subscription after the first month anyway.

I really don’t see a downside to making the base game free, period.

And, don’t make it dependent on Twitch or any other platform; just offer it via the FFXIV site.

There’s already a free unlimited trial allowing everyone to reach lvl35. Adding more free levels would allow more gil farmers farm more gil and more crafting materials. I already see many lvl50 bots in game but at least now they are still paying customers so there’s some benefit from them…

I disagree, F2P conversions bring a whole slew of baggage along with that business model it is far from rainbows and unicorns.

Besides the subscription is a pittance and even the games base price is a literal quarter of what it once was it is hardly an expensive investment.

I respect Square for keeping is Subscription based and it proves as I’ve said before that subscription games can and do exist and survive just fine.

I never suggested there should not be a subscription. I only suggested that they make the base game free to acquire permanently. I fully support the subscription model for this game. But it makes zero sense to charge for the base game if you want to entice new folks to try the game in a serious way.

They have a free tiral as has been mentioned by Random MMO fan above, that does the job your suggesting and like I say with the base game being s cheap anyway its enough that anyone who plays thetrial and is interested will drop the 2 cups of coffee missed needed for it and anyone who isn’t won’t.

Not to mention the ARR story is incredibly lengthy. Folks can probably spend a month or few on just getting through that story content alone.

You only have to buy the latest expansion even if you only own the base game, as all previous expansions are included with it.

This one is called ‘The Starter Edition’ – so it may be different.
