Elder Scrolls Online class reps discuss upcoming racial changes, itemization, and more

A few days ago, the folks at ZeniMax Online Studios held a call with their Elder Scrolls Online class reps, and some of the notes from that meeting have been posted to the game’s forums for players’ perusal. There was a wide array of topics on the table during the meeting, including the newly revamped racial traits — which the devs detailed not too long ago in a separate preview — as well as itemization, class balance, and more.

One of the primary focuses of the meeting, of course, was on the revamping of the various racial abilities, as that’s one of the biggest changes coming in the next update. According class rep Joy_Division (who took the notes that players can read on the forums), the devs have “taken [the class reps’] and the community’s feedback to heart and are legitimately trying to make [the racial changes] as smooth as possible.” Although some details are still being kept under wraps due to NDAs, Joy_Division breaks down exactly how the devs intend to change the racials from their current incarnations on the PTS, so if you’re interested to know exactly how your favorite race is going to be affected, it’s definitely worth a read. The post also talks a bit about some other community concerns that the class reps raised with the devs, so for all the details, you can find the full post over at the game’s forums.

I’ve only been back in game for a few weeks but I’m finding the responses on the forums rather confusing. People are complaining about “buffs” to Argonians…based, presumably, on 1) the meta for tanks favoring the race, and 2) the nerfs to the race that were proposed in the initial round of race changes being “reversed”. But I don’t see any reversal of those proposed changes. I’m confused.

Also, forum conversations about changes to game races are almost as tiresome as those about class changes. So many empty ragequit threats.

As long as there are viable alternatives to Argonian Tanks, don’t get me wrong I enjoy my Argonian but I’d feel more natural tanking as a Nord or even Imperial.

I can’t help but be fascinated. Humans are peculiar creatures with odd preconceptions. I’m not saying you’re wrong, nor am I being in any way competitive, but rather I can’t wrap my mind around how a species as diverse as Imperials would be in any meaningful way less natural than a very human-looking race.

Is this just personal preference? If it is, that’s a funny way to put it. Whomsoever is tanking looks natural in the role because that’s an incredibly well-trained individual whose expertise is in providing cover for their comrades-in-arms.

Did you perhaps mean you’d feel more comfortable, as opposed to natural, in playing a tank role as an argonian? Or, perhaps, to drill down into this a little further, any role?

The Elder Scrolls Online that I knew had been trying to move away from painfully troped, stereotypical depictions of race.

“White guys can do dis, black guys can do dat” was never a good look for any game.

The word I’m looking for here, more than any, is typecasting. Wherein an actor will be awkwardly shoehorned into the same role time and again for reason other than this is what the shallowly inclined viewing audience will think of them as. This famously happened to Leonard Nimoy.

It’s funny to me, and perhaps only a little bit morbidly disheartening, that even a race quite so alien as argonians can be typecast.

Not meant to offend, just a consideration worthy of rumination.

From the PTS patch notes:

Argonian
Life Mender: Increased the Healing Done bonus to 6% from 4%.
Resourceful: Increased the Health, Magicka, and Stamina restore from drinking a potion to 4000 from 3620.
Developer Comment:
Spoiler
After the adjustment to allow flat stats to scale better with CP, we wanted to improve some of the bonuses of Argonians so they could keep up. We targeted their Healing Done bonus to help make it feel more impactful for their identity as strong healers, and their Resourceful passive to help highlight their ability to stay in the fray.

This sounds very good to me. I am not sure what the problem is.

Other studios should take note of this. Actively engaging your player base and soliciting feedback is great.

Instituting a class rep system, being engaged, and adjusting changes based on that feedback is immensely time consuming and difficult. It will also result in a better finished product and really contributes to the games long term health.

It’s great to see that not only does ZOS have a great community management and development team, but also a ongoing passion for excellence.

Looking forward to another great year and new adventures!
