Sci-fi survival sandbox Astroneer has officially launched out of early access

A couple of months ago, I called Astroneer a “lavish multiplayer space sandbox,” and I meant it: This is one of the most vivid painterly sci-fi survivalboxes ever and I can’t wait to dip into it. And as of today, I can, and so can you, as it’s launched out of early access and into the wilds of planetary exploration.

“Adventurous travelers harness their ingenuity to thrive on seven uncharted planets, unraveling the mysteries of abandoned structures strewn across their surfaces. Excavate, elevate and terraform through vibrant terrain in whimsical worlds teeming with unfamiliar oddities. Exploration takes exciting turns as astronauts encounter mysterious structures and dangerous obstacles, then engineer new technology to light the way. Additions to character customization empowers astronauts to show their own personal tastes as they distinguish themselves from friends in four-player co-op. The first major post-launch update will bring dedicated servers and cross-play, enabling adventurers to build their bases and embark on journeys together regardless of platform and doubling the maximum number of players to eight.”

The game is $23.99 on Steam and the Xbox One store for the same price – yes, PC and console simultaneously launch!

Get caught up on all our coverage of the game so far, and stay tuned – MJ’s gonna be streaming as always!

Played it while in early access. Love the game. So much fun to just play around in. Looking forward to playing with all the new updates now :)

IronSalamander8 .

Jumped into it a bit last night. Lots of new things. Kind of surprised that they changed so much without further testing in EA. Seems strange to have an EA program but have so much new on launch day. Regardless of that, it’s a pretty decent experience and look forward to seeing more new stuff.

Haven’t been able to log in since the launch, but I’ve put about 30 hours in during pre-release… Great game if you like this sort of gameplay and like the different graphic style. One of the best IMO.

can’t get into this aesthetic.

I wish they didn’t put off dedicated servers as it’s a game I’d love to play with friends on a central server. Also, did they ever add any other sort of life? I thought the game was fun when it was first released on early access but I felt after a while it was missing something else to do.

If you enjoy survival mode, exploration, and base building, it’s very much worth the purchase price. Also, devs treat their customers well.

Ive held off from getting this game for over a year. Passed by the very few and select sales they have had on it… all for one reason. Ive read numerous times that the game has some really serious performance issues.

As of yet, I havent seen anything that shows they have fixed them. So it looks like ill still be keeping my wallet closed.

Ive read numerous times that the game has some really serious performance issues.

For what it’s worth, I have an eight year old PC with a 1050 card, and it plays fine for me (medium settings). /shrug

You could get it and try it out. You have two hours game play time to decide if performance is an issue for you or not. If it is, get a refund.

EDIT: Another measuring stick, Monster Hunter World plays poorly on the same PC on low settings.

Yeah I haven had zero performance issues, playing on a mediocre to high end PC by today’s standards.

Been keeping my eye on this one for a while and now that its out of early access I don’t imagine it will be too long before it is in my game collection.

This is one of my favorite games. It hasn’t left my hard drive since I installed it. The sense of exploration is rarely this deep. There are times I wish there were actual alien life to interact with but going down in caves never gets old.
