Sea of Thieves kicks off the Friends Play Free event today

THIS WOULD BE EASIER WITH MORE PEOPLE

The old aphorism is that there’s no honor among thieves. But there can be honor, companionship, and even just good old-fashioned friendship in Sea of Thieves. You just need to get your friends playing, and to do that, the game is kicking off its new Friends Play Free event with today’s maintenance. Players who have joined the free “Insiders” program will get a code that can be distributed to their friends, allowing them to play the game for free for the duration of the event.

The update is also adding the new Mercenary Voyages to the game to give players a quick idea of all the various content available in the game, a fine tour for players heretofore unfamiliar with the high seas adventures available in the title. The goal, as mentioned explicitly, is to have more players in and excited for the game’s upcoming one-year anniversary on March 20th. So if it’s a pirate’s life for you and you’d like it to be a pirate’s life for your friends as well, take advantage of the promotion when maintenance is finished.

Friends don’t let friends play sea of thieves.

One thing I really want small scale multiplayer games (a category in which I include Sea of Thieves) to implement is allowing players to get a “group” license.

Imagine, for example, that you purchase the game 4 times. But, instead of having to permanently give the extra copies to other people, you get to keep the extra copies in your account, and they allow you to at any time bring into the game up to three other friends who don’t have their own copies of the game.

It would be great for many kinds of games, and IMHO an effective — and permanent — way to empower players to convince their friends to purchase the game.

Cool idea but sounds like a real security snafu.

Steam already has the infrastructure in place with their “family sharing” feature; they would just have to enable multiple people playing a game simultaneously for games where you have more than one copy on your account. Online games like Sea of Thieves should also be able to easily add it if they wanted.

well if they could figure something like that out – I’d probably be a buyer.

Of course when you launch SoT it doesn’t automatically update. You have to shut it down via Task Manager. because Microsoft didn’t invent the OS they can’t do the most simple tasks.

Or you can go into the Microsoft Store and manage installations/downloads or whatever and it should theoretically start downloading from there.

I did that – after I realized their game doesn’t go seemless like 100% of all other games. Don’t forget this is MS – not some bullshit maker of Atlas.

Also: store doesn’t open when you open the game. Can’t exit the game without task manager.

badbadbad!

Yeah at the end of the day it’s pretty much a poopshow. I really wish they’d just put the game out on other distribution platforms or allow us to have some independent launcher away from the MS Store.

Though there’s also the forced integration with the bleh Xbox Live app that still doesn’t have push-to-talk for group chat.

Sounds interesting. Maybe it’ll soon be time to give the game a more thorough chance again.
