Watch our New World hands-on session

Have you ever wished you could look over the shoulder of someone as he or she playtested a game at a press event? This time, you can! You got to read about my hands-on experience with Amazon Game Studios’ New World yesterday, but now you can actually see what I was talking about. This is the exact footage of part of that play session. (Yes, the studio knows I am showing it — the devs are the ones who recorded it!) Sorry, it is sans player chat so you can’t hear the crazy quips and quibbles, but you can hear the game itself and feel the ambiance to get a sense of the gameplay so far. You also can see my character’s impressive muttonchops!

The session included a few moments of beginning life, moved on to a ghost hunt, then culminated in a siege. There might be a few instances of shooting our dev guide (you can’t blame us, he went criminal!), and possible an exploration of the death mechanic. I also tried to poke around a few different windows. Not all of the play was recorded, but there is a meaty chunk here to sample, so enjoy this taste of New World.

Heh. It already looks better and (from what I can see) functions better than Atlas.

Looks like any other survival game with slightly better graphics

and lots and lots of money behind it with one of the biggest companies on the planet behind it. that’s worth something.

Oh my…

…and stuck between a wall and a barrel.

It seems they still have a tricky bit of detail work to do. Technical debt is showing. Still, it has my attention.

It looks like they are making good progress. I’ll be keeping an eye on this especially if they link it to Amazon Prime.

It looks good. I really like the visuals including the UI, fonts etc. The in-game map is very nicely detailed. The music is suitably atmospheric. The shoulder cam makes it more immersive to watch but it would be frustrating if you can’t pan farther out. Overall, I’m impressed with what was shown here. Looking forward to seeing more.

The video footage is nice. The movement and combat mechanics look familiar to anyone who’s done PVP in the last 10 years. What is most interesting to see when attacking outposts/forts/etc is the siege and counter siege equipment. In addition, it would be good to see how the graphics hold up in a large combat environment too.

The only question I have is how amazon is planning to roll this into their subscription sphere.

Amazon Games launcher. Prime subscribers get access to some additional games/services on it. Cosmetic MTX in the game itself, possibly bonuses for Prime.

That’s what I might do if I were in charge but I want to know what they do. I think it would be boss if they did that and made a whole bunch of casual games in the ecosystem as well – grab the grandmas and such like Angry Birds did a million years ago. Put assholes like EA and Activision out of business for good.

I mean when you install the New World beta you do so through the Amazon Games launcher and lemme tell you…there’s a whole lotta room for product in that interface.

I got invited to test this a couple of weeks ago, but my PC is too old to run it :-(

Looks interesting, thanks for sharing! I’m curious about the “War declared!” part, about 25 mins in. Is that one company/guild declaring war on another? Is that New Worlds way of preventing a FFA scrum, or was it something different?

They’re changing the mechanics/details constantly, I wouldn’t try to form too many opinions on the systems at this time.

I watched the first 5 minutes on my phone! I’ll definitely be watching the rest tonight on my PC! Even on my phone I was very impressed!
