City of Titans demos the current state of its elaborate character creation

Rebuild. Rise.

Yesterday’s City of Titans update was… pretty horrifying. Fortunately, today’s update is probably more like what backers had in mind, as Missing Worlds Media has posted several minutes of footage of the upcoming superhero MMO’s elaborate character creator.

Fans of City of Heroes – and let’s be real, that’s pretty much everyone watching this game – are going to recognize a lot of the options here, with basic options on skin materials, height, and a broad costume color palette, but also some new additions, like arm length, if for some reason you really need to make your toon super disproportionate and creep everyone out. And the hair!

We got our first look at the character creator about a year ago, and a quick comparison makes it clear how far the tool has come in that time, in spite of the setbacks suffered by the team last fall. Check out the whole video below. It’s not Issue 0, but it’s something.

And here’s last year’s for comparison:

I never played COH and other than your stream in the paragon thingy i never even seen any footage of the game.

As a super hero fan i can’t wait to play these games, and i guess i’m the target audience for something like customizable arm length, if you can have asymmetrical or multiple arms it will be ever better.

Wow

Those do not look like normal human poses, or skeletal structures, even before they make the hulky rock character.

Humans dont stand like that, or bend like that. Where the hell is the rock guys shoulder joint in the slow motion part where he is punching?

Just looks… so wrong.

Nice costume design control though

That’s the part we’re really showing off. Animations and model weights is weaker and good volunteers who can work on it have been *extremely* hard to come by.

well, props then, the costume design and customization is great.

Hope you can manage to get the actual player models up to par as well by release.

The biggest change over City of Heroes is arguably the material control over costumes. Watching the video, you will note that not only are we controlling color, but the actual material of each distinctly color-able area of the costume. Our options currently range from a number of fabrics and metals to a couple of more organic ones, and we’ll be expanding that selection pretty much until the game sunsets.

Looks awesome! I’m always interested to see how costume designers mix modern fabrics in superhero and genre costumes, and how the differing textures imply different material strengths or areas of flexibility. Doing this in the character creator is very cool indeed!

I need to see hoods WITH hair or I shan’t be happy lol

Missing Worlds Media

Yes, we can do that.

How about animated pigtails? >.>

As opposed to just having some physics so they move?

Reader

Yeah, precisely! /wiggles pigtails

(To be clear though, as long as you include said hairstyle or so and the option to make them pink…I will be very satisfied with that. Thnkx! :) )

Thanks to the existence of hair super powers, there is some demand for animated hair. This is not a challenge for launch, but we’ll see. It’s an MMO, so never say never.

They got my attention. Second best character creator after BDO.

High praise, indeed. BLACK DESERT ONLINE raises the bar pretty high. CITY OF TITANS has really … carried the torch … (see what I did there? ;-) ahem) from CITY OF HEROES to the next level graphically.

One of the nice things that was hard to see in that video but was shown in other videos and pictures from their Make Anyone campaign is asymmetry. Emo Strange (as I dubbed him) had hair that was very asymmetrical. Being able to have single or mismatched gloves, wrist bands, leg bands, accessories and outfits will really allow a metric buttload of variety in game. Right from the start being able to swap heads / bodies of either (traditional) gender is a ginormous deal.

(For all the COH fans miffed only males got to have Huge physiques, COT has you covered.)

Chris ‘Warcabbit’ made a couple Huge style females, just to prove he could. They look pretty darn good. We’ll share one one of these days.

IronSalamander8 .

The customization options look pretty decent in this one. Would have to use it for myself to really get a feel for it though.

Looks good! But honestly, so did yesterday’s avatar, albeit in an intentionally unappealing way.

Legend Of Vinny T

My first impression of that was “Violator using a Cupid costume to harass Spawn”. Needed more blue facepaint, though.
