Anthem’s day one patch nukes infinite loading screen and adds loot to bosses

I will sing you the song of my people.

With all of the early access and previews running, you could be forgiven for feeling that Anthem had already launched. It has not, however; the game is launching on February 22nd, and it has a patch incoming for launch day on Friday. This includes a slew of technical fixes such as removing infinite loading screens, decreasing loading times, and a number of crash bugs that players identified during the early access. All of which is good.

The game is also adding numbers for weapons and gear modifiers, a display for stronghold bosses dropping loot, correcting various specific mission issues, and similar assorted issues. So the experience should be more polished when the game moves into its full launch on Friday; whether it will be enough to pull you into the game’s jumping mechanics or not remains to be seen.

Maybe I’ll be able to load in fast enough that the rest of my group hasn’t finished the mission yet after this patch.
Damn the load screens are super long.

The Day 1 patch dropped yesterday evening. So, I have had a good chance to look at what was delivered because I did not go to work today (unrelated issue). And…

The game, in general, is running much smoother. The bugs impacting progression have been fixed, and while I did not tick off every issue on the list, it bodes well that they did deliver most of what they promised.

BUT, about those load screens… These screens are baked into the design. It’s frontloading memory/HD among other things. So, while load screen times have been improved it is still variable depending on what you are doing. So, not a night and day change in terms of waiting time and it never will be. And, btw, it is still possible to get an infinite load screen although it doesn’t happen often now.

The story will feel detached. If you are looking for ME where NPCs are right in the thick of it with you? Not gonna happen. It’s not how this game is designed.

And, last. This game as it is delivered is generating a starting point. Unlike other games that deliver all the “goods” at point of sale, EA is truly going the service route. Which means that their ok with delivering a product that is functionally complete, but missing story, features, and gameplay.

So, your call on joining the Freelancers. The day 1 patch was, meh, a fair start. I’m having fun.

I’m staying on the boat. Full steam ahead boys! We may hit an iceberg but we will have a great time doing it.

These days it’s always best not to preorder and wait a few weeks for the inevitable patches and price drop.
Especially when EA is involved.
They love to release unfinished games.

They aren’t finished until the gross monetization goes in.

Post patch loading times are double that of Sonic 06′, last gens beaten horse for ‘most abysmal load times’ of its generation.

I got the feeling this will be good and bad all rolled into one. A patch doing that much is going to make new bugs most likely. It’s great when companies do big patches that make the game better but I am going to be honest I would rather see patches with less done at one time but done more frequently in the future. I know this is a release day patch to try and fix things that are still there from the beta/demo though.

I was content to wait a few weeks myself but… it turned out that my wife *really* liked the demo. She easily put in 10+ hours during that weekend and she doesn’t game much these days. So I shucked my usual “wait and see” and pre-purchased so I’d be ready to play with her when it launches.

After several hours I’m still on the fence about this game, it is enjoyable but I have this nagging feeling I will get tired of it rather quickly. It’s very pretty, runs well, plays well but the story so far is not what I’d expect from Bioware and it lacks variety in it’s missions.

Right now I’d say it’s not worth the full box price, it is however worth taking a month sub to Origin premier for a playthrough because who doesn’t want to feel like Ironman for a few hours.

In all fairness, I judge on what is delivered right now and I ignore any promises made by a publisher for the future. With time this can become a truly great game but I have my doubts on EA sticking with it and pouring in the cash to make it so.

tldr: Enjoyable but ‘Clouded the future is’

I’m in the same boat. I have to kind of force myself to play, but I enjoy it when I do and end up just losing time. I think its going to be a very divisive game in the end.

They really need to make guns feel better though and make Fort Tarsus not terrible to get around.

Good to see fixes and improvement, but it’s a shame that this game will realistically need months to a year worth of patches and updates to make it “good.” There are some big foundational issues that need addressing, and those can’t be fixed quickly. I’m level 26, finished the story, and I am already bored. The combat and flight are fun, but boy oh boy does the rest of the game absolutely drag.

This is a game fundamentally at odds with itself. You make a game with amazing flight and combat that lets players feel like a badass Iron Man, then you design systems that mean they spend a majority of their time not doing that fun thing! Who thought this was a good idea? There should be no reason I can’t finish my current mission, manage my gear, and launch another mission in the span of 5 minutes or less. It shouldn’t involve half a dozen loading screens, walking around to grind through conversations, and then walking back to your suit, all to launch another 10 minute mission.

I’m looking forward to the day 1 patch. But there are so many changes in there that the patch itself might become an issue. Heh.

We will see.

I am for sure seeing signs that the Developers are in too much of a frenzy to change shit to apease the haters and the trolls.

Hopefully they don’t patch the game into the dumpster.
