The Daily Grind: What will your next MMO superhero be?

Rebuild. Rise.

With the next wave of several superhero MMORPGs on the way (Valiance OnlineCity of Titans, SEGS, and Ship of Heroes), two games currently running (Champions Online, DCUO), and one chat shell running (Paragon Chat), there has never been a better time to plan that perfect caped — or spandexed! — crusader.

So looking to whichever MMO you prefer, what will your next superhero be? Today let’s pretend we have the best character creator at our disposal and fashion up our next, best heroes. What will he, she, or it look like? What powersets will you pick? What will the hero’s origin story and background be? And most importantly, what pun-laden name are you going to inflict upon the world?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

Buffer Overflow, a support characters giving out durability buffs (preferably force fields) and with water powers for attacks.

(Someone has to do it…. can’t let a pun like that lie unused.)

Woodstock, the champion of easy love and rock & roll. A very androgynous, long-haired, pink-clad character with a flowery powerset that controls mood. Naturally, his conveyance of choice is a flying guitar which streaks across the sky with a vibrant rainbow.

Mr. Nobody would love this fellah. (By which I mean the original Grant Morrison version.)

Queenie, a reformed villain, also an oversized, mutant bee diva who learned that with her newfound sapience came the ability to indoctrinate almost any creature into her hive via various somewhat nefarious means. Which seemed fine, until she learned that people really don’t enjoy being enthralled into a hivemind and chose to make amends.

Swearwolf, a hard-boiled, hirsuite detective with a penchant for potty-mouthed perp bustin’. Tries too hard to live up to the noir ideal and aesthetic, despite being a big, emotional baby. His manly cigars are notoriously fake, not that anyone would call him on it.

Onomatopoeia, or Ono to their friends, is a reality warping energy being whose powers are limited to what could reasonably work as an onomatopoeia. Has few friends due to communication difficulties, and has thus learned the value of such intimately close bonds.

Tenfold, a creature of living origami whose origin story involves an experimental process to develop reusable paper. Pretty good at disguises so long as you don’t look too closely. Hates beards.

And texguile, whose meta power is to control carpets. No, not really. Well… maybe, it is tempting. And they wear a carpet suit. Probably.

Likely part of some Holistic Fellowship of Good-Doers who Need a Better Team Name.

~~ Edit ~~

Swapped Brotherhood for Fellowship, much better. Just because Marvel uses gendered group names doesn’t mean I should.

~~ Edit the Second ~~

Am I the only one playing this game? Aaw.

~~ Edit the Third ~~

I’m going to leave this alone now before I add even more to it and turn it into something other than a hopefully funny throwaway post.

I don’t even know which of the upcoming MMOs I’ll settle on, let alone what character I’ll play. I have serious alt-itus, so will probably spend a good chunk of my time just making new characters and costumes.

<– Alt-o-holic i'm afraid. I simply do not think in terms of ONE character.. EVER :) Especially in Super Hero games where the potential for viariation in form and function is much more varied than a typical fantasy or sci fi game.

So the short answer would be.. LOTs

Hoping the three in dev will come out, but am not too hopeful. They’re copying the COH gameplay which as of now is dated and slow.
DCUO has become a lootbox fest with content dictated by the movie cadence.
CO is a shallow costume creator with no gameplay.

None since there are not any based off Marvel.

I’m supposed to tell everyone here, and give away my secret identity? Never! :-D

You’re Ghost Widow.

Everyone knows.

Heh. Ghost Widow is far sexier (and far more female) than I have ever been — but thanks for the vote of confidence, Camren! :-)

Just so were clear and for, you know Lois Lanes benefit… putting on glasses is NOT a secret identity lol

Point taken, NeoWolf.

On a related note, if you see Lois today, please tell her that I might be late for our dinner date. Something just blew up down near Hob’s Bay. I expect that Luthor and Brainiac are up to something awful again.

Thanks,

Clark

I’m going to go with either Ship Of Heroes or City of Titans. I’m going to remake all of my old CoH alts. I may change up some of the power sets but I’m keeping their essence intact. I’m making them all at once but playing them in stages until I get the mechanics down. After I’ve gotten at least three to the level cap I’ll experiment with any new classes amd power sets. Hope they allow for villain play as well.
