Here’s how Star Trek Online is revamping its character creation UI

The better for playing Space Barbie, natch

If you’re still upset over the impending loss of the Star Trek Online player-made quest Foundry system, make this will perk you and your imagination back up: PWE and Cryptic just announced that they’re heavily revamping the character creator UI.

“The character creator is one of those features you see in games that started out simple, and worked fine when it was made, but as new factions and species were added to the game, it quickly got bloated and overwhelming,” UI Artist Jo Gianulis explains. “My first goal was to clean up the UI and cut down on the visual clutter. We used to just throw every option at you all at once on one page. When I built my first character I was so excited to see all the options, and the LCARS were so immersive, but I was so overwhelmed that I had to walk away and come back to it later. We wanted to take away that overwhelming feeling, while still giving you access to all the options you wanted.”

The retooled UI aims to keep the “spirit” of the old UI while making it way more obvious and easy to actually pick which style of pointy ears and eyebrows and head width you want. Plus there are plenty of quality-of-life tweaks as part of what Gianulis is “hoping this will just be the first of many polish passes for older UI systems in the game.”

She does note that the tailor UI isn’t changing – just the character creation. We’re here for Space Barbie. More like this please devs.

Hmmm. A QoL upgrade that wasn’t necessary. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the Foundry dies and official content is released at a pace far slower than a snail.

All fine and good, certainly an improvement from 9 years ago (as one would expect). But the game overall has some very real, very fundamental issues that needs to be taken care of, long before yet another UI reskin.

Which is exactly the problem that I’ve always had with STO. The game needs exploration content but the devs have spent the last 9 years rewriting old missions, refurbishing Earth Space Dock 5 times, adding more ships and doo-dads to the in-game store, and removing content instead of adding more.

STO seems to have been sinking since launch and the devs have been busy hanging more pictures on the wall instead of bailing water.

Speaking as someone who has rolled and rerolled multiple alts and repeated much of the content, I’ve noticed that sometimes the changes to old content actually make the experience worse. For example, I loved the original Tarsi voice-over (Lani Minella?) in Agents of Yesterday. It was spirited and campy. For some odd reason though they felt they needed to redo it, and now it’s rather deadpan.

Further, although I kind of like the Discovery aesthetics, lately Cryptic seems hell-bent on going back and shoehorning Discovery into old content. Additionally, I mostly liked their streamlined versions of the DS9 and the Fed Romulan arcs, but in the process they axed some excellent missions while keeping dreadful ones like the uber tedious ‘Coliseum’. To me it’s all kind of weird, and something I’ve never seen in other mmo’s.

I wish they could do something about the character animations in STO and NW too. They’re so stilted and arthritic, it’s a real fly in an otherwise lovely pair of ointments.

I hope they do this for Neverwinter too (not that I play it), because in Neverwinter, it’s nigh-impossible to create a character that doesn’t look like a roadkill.

Interesting that. One of the big turn-offs that killed my enthusiasm for Neverwinter was how dreadful the player avatars looked. As you say, ‘roadkill’.

Then I don’t care. I don’t plan on making any more characters.

Well, they did say the changes will probably make it to the STO Tailor eventually. They just didn’t want to hit the current Player base with the change across both at the same time.
