Camelot Unchained beta testers peek at the characters 2.0 revamp and new crafting UI

One of the things that drew me to Camelot Unchained from the very beginning was its clothing and armor, of all things. Yes, I’ll be here for the crafting and RvR and building and vendors, but the concept artists for this game inspired me by designing gear that I’d actually want to wear. You can see a bit of those concepts in the game’s latest developer post, which is apparently just the start of a miniseries on how gear is developing (skirts over pants, and they’re not all buttcapes, who knew?).

And that’s just part of the dev letter. City State Games’ Tyler Rockwell says the studio is busy testing both Characters 2.0 and the new crafting UI, both of which were presented in their current form to player testers in beta one this past weekend (beta one began last summer, you’ll recall, and is still very much under NDA). “The Characters 2.0 work, for me, has been a long road — which has resulted in much-better-looking characters,” he writes. “It’s also really nice to see the new crafting UI getting put through its early paces. We spent a lot of time looking at concepts, so seeing it working is a blast!”

Is the game playable yet? I backed and logged in a few times a while back but it was super alpha quality imo. I’d like to get back in there, but I’m waiting for more of the actual world to be playable as opposed to just small PVP battles.

It was the outfits that drew me in as well. Prior, I figured Camelot Unchained was yet another PvP title, which the trend is presently ad nauseum, and I tend to skip over any titles with “PvP” in it now. I clicked on that particular post last year and have built enough curiosity over the title that I have decided to invest in the game when it releases. I rather enjoy battlefield-type PvP and look forward to the game’s release.

I’m interested in Beta-ing this but I can’t quite figure out a couple of things.

I’m game to put money in as a backer but it looks like I can move up the tier to higher levels so I might one day be at the ‘I am Eternal’ category. That doesn’t seem clear to me. I always liked this for City of Heroes.

Also, name reservation was mentioned and I’d sure be interested in that but it’s not clear who can and cannot reserve names or even if name reserving is a thing. If it’s just a thing for the founders and not builders?

Or if there is something else going on.

As far as I know, yes;). Once I backed at eternal warrior ( beta 1 or 2, can’t remember which). I stopped following too closely (I have a hype problem, this alleviates that somewhat). I know that you could increase incrementally, not sure if that’s still possible. I’ll defer to MJ who I’m sure will be here!

A wild MJ appears. He usually does.

If memory serves name reservation was available through using Founders Points. The Founder Store will be produced most likely towards the end of the Beta cycle. With the addition of Builders tiers I dont remember a solid answer for reservation. I imagine MJ will pop on here, and have a better answer.

I’m also thinking of jumping in but I also have lots of questions. Mind you if the FAQ was updated which it hasn’t been in years some of those questions would be answered.

Is the game in beta now, and if so which phase?
Has the NDA been dropped yet?
What will be the monthly subscription rate?
What aspect if any of the game will be influenced by the cash shop?
Whats the crafting mechanics like?

Hello there,
Is the game in beta now, and if so which phase? Beta 1 Old School Beta, not the betas people are used to for polish.

Has the NDA been dropped yet? No

What will be the monthly subscription rate? Yes.

What aspect if any of the game will be influenced by the cash shop? No Jpeg Platypus Pets.

Whats the crafting mechanics like? Check the website for Crafting Doc. Much of it is in the process of being implemented. https://camelotunchained.com/v3/bsc-design-docs/crafting-part-deux/

If no cash shop then just what are the special game items that you get with a pledge?

This is a situation where something meets the technical definition but not the practical/functional one.

Like knowing a tomato’s a fruit but not putting it in fruit salad because it doesn’t have the traits people want when they want to eat fruit.

The Founders shop is technically a cash shop by selling cosmetics that are founders only, as a reward for people who were a necessary part of getting development into existence.

But it’s practically different:

1) not going to get dev time as an ongoing thing post launch (i.e. art assets, game design stuff), won’t be continuously adding stuff,

2) it’s required to not break kickstarter agreement with founders,

3) permanently limited # of people who can partake in it,

4) not a part of their revenue/business model in any meaningful way, even at this stage (again, only needed to get the thing off the ground),

5) no advertising for it has been done up to this point past the kickstarter-era.

MJ has gone back and forth on whether they’ll have a cash shop at all.

He’s gone from “NO CASH SHOP” to “no traditional cash shop” and back again, without really explaining that distinction (i.e. does “traditional” just reference the Founders shop, so he doesn’t get called for having a cash shop after saying no cash shop? Or does he have plans to put in a limited cash shop? If he does plan that, what are the definite limits on what will/won’t be put in that shop?)
