BioWare patches Anthem to buff loot quality at higher difficulties

If you’re following the loot saga of Anthem, you might have begun to suspect that nothing BioWare could do would actually make everyone happy. Nevertheless, the studio patched its seemingly struggling looter-shooter today with a tiny server-side update that it characterizes as “notable changes to the loot drop rate.” Specifically, here’s what’s changed:

“Masterwork & Legendary drop rates have been increased for Grandmaster 2 and Grandmaster 3 difficulty levels. Masterwork & Legendary drop rates have been increased for harder enemies at all difficulty levels. This includes: Legendary Titan, Epic Titan, Legendary Fury, Legendary Acid Ursix and Legendary Luminary Elder.”

It’s not entirely clear just how much those drops have been increased yet, but we suspect that the community will be testing that post haste. Reddit overall seems pretty pleased, though the feedback thread is loaded with more requests. As for those promised future updates? “Yeah, we aren’t ready to give specifics on future stuff yet, but the team is working hard over here,” BioWare says.

Yes focus on loot drops and not the skid mark of shit this game calls content.

I was hyped, I’ll admit it but I’ve since uninstalled. Fact is, I will shocked if they turn this ship around.

I mentioned yesterday that even in the Freeplay area I was seeing better drops with 4 Masterworks and 1 Legendary drop in less than 45 minutes of exploring.

And again this morning. A quick run in Freeplay yielded Masterworks and Legendary. I’m not used to seeing Legendary in Freeplay.

Meanwhile the game got hit by discoveries of other idiotic algorithms within it: to get highest damage output (not a bogus number displayed but highest actual TTK) a player has to strip everything but the most powerful item. Literally a glass cannon build. Player’s damage output is being calculated based on an average level of all equipment, not just a gun. Similar results for apparently useless +%armor stat: +25% armor actually add 4-5% survivability (24 hits vs 25 hits)

It should be noted how all of this is happening a month after release within a team with few hundreds people in it. Yet we still have noobs who declare “it’s just a beta, release will be better” during bad beta tests.

Yea, I’ve seen the post on Reddit. Over 7k upvotes, 9 Gold gifted. The game just keep delivering LuLz non-stop…

P.S: Can’t wait for more fanatics of this game coming up with more useless excuses for it (such as “it will be fixed in next patch 1.0.4! Which will inevitably break more things, but those will also be fixed in later patches!”) in this thread ;-)

What you describe reminds me horribly of the mess that is the bolster in PVP and tank stats in SWTOR. Worthy of nightmares.

That’s exactly what I thought of. Probably the same people responsible for that stupidity too.

Interesting, now that Division 2 is out to pretty great reviews, supposedly a significant amount more content and a more meaningful endgame Bioware does something they should have done for day one patch.

Hmm.

TD2 release didn’t change anything – at least not my decision to completely ignore the boring game with ugly toons and purchase Anthem with 50% discount a month or two later.

note: Anthem with 50% discount will cost the same as full-priced TD2 in my region.

I am just looking at the general public reception for TD2 vs Anthem and I must say this doesn’t leave Anthem in a very good spot. TD2 seems to dwarf anthem when it comes to the amount of content.

I haven’t played The Division after all the major updates and patches but from what I’ve heard it became a pretty solid game in the end. The current sentiment across the board seems to be that Ubisoft just built upon that foundation. People on Reddit seem to be very happy with the launch. Critics seem to be a lot more positive than Anthems 6/10 scores.

So I guess what I am trying to say is that the objective opinion between the two games is that Division 2 is a far superior game in a looter shooter genre.

P.S. Anthem was 50% off soon after launch. You don’t have to wait a couple of months.

Good fixes, hopefully they’ll help with folks leaving Heart of Rage before the last boss.

Sounds like they’ve got a fix for the gear scaling (given that you do the most damage with a legendary weapon – doesn’t matter what – and level 1 gear in all other slots right now…) coming with the next patch too. Apparently it takes all unlocked gear slots into account when calculating your power level now (so 11 at max level?) which is a decent first step, but hot damn does it sound like it creates a painfully boring situation where players are incentivized to simply equip their highest level legendaries regardless of what mods are on them : /

Ugh, it’s clear BW are trying but that the game just fundamentally seems like a god-damn mess and not what 6 years of work (even with some of that being pre-production with a small team) from a AAA studio should look like.

At this point I’m on board with them pulling the game down for a few months to break/rebuild the broken loot/scaling systems without needing to worry about the live game and player experience. I just don’t see any “fast” paths forward for them, and I don’t know if players will have the patience to wait for them.

I quite enjoy people leaving on the Heart of Rage last boss, I get to go in as quickjoin and get great loot for very little effort.

I didn’t follow this much but it appears the Reddit boycott did have an effect. After Bioware called their bluff?

probably helped that division 2 is out to decently great reviews and has a full featured endgame at launch

I don’t get the comparison TD2 doesn’t really play anything like Anthem and is kind of boring. I guess they are both shooters?

theyre both fps games where randomly generated loot with ridiculous and unrealistic abilities (in a good way) and rpg progression systems are the main draws for continuing to play. whether you find one boring and the other not doesnt mean they arent essentially the same gameplay loop with different paint and mechanics on top.
