The first season of Apex Legends officially begins today with the release of the premiere battle pass and the addition of the game’s first post-launch character, Octane.

The battle pass provides a hundred levels for players to progress through, each of which provides a shiny reward for completion, including new cosmetics, stat trackers, and more. There are two flavors of battle pass on offer: there’s the standard battle pass, which you can snag for 950 Apex Coins (about $9.50 US), and then there’s the so-called battle pass bundle (2,800 Apex Coins, or about $28.00 US), which is really just the standard battle pass with the first 25 levels already completed.

The new season also sees the introduction of the game’s first post-launch character, Octane. This cybernetic adrenaline junkie has the ability to sacrifice his health to bolster his movement speed, though his passive ability will allow him to slowly regen his lost health when he isn’t being shot at. His ultimate lets him toss launch pads on the ground, allowing his teammates (and anyone else who happens across them) to bounce into the skies for a quick burst of speed and mobility. Octane isn’t attached to the battle pass; he’s available for purchase for 750 Apex Coins (about $7.50 US) just like Mirage and Caustic.

Good god that is a terrible battlepass. All the good shit is in the lootboxes, limited boring reskins, no challenges. Why even buy the battlepass?

You’d think with EA’s resources it’d be easy to copy Fortnite’s successfull battlepass system, but nope, they couldn’t even do that.

But then again, this is EA we’re talking about.

People have been speculating that it’s this way because they didn’t have much time to prepare. That initially no battle pass release was planned yet, but then the game blew up and tons of people started demanding it, or rather, started demanding some form of progression to make the game feel more purposeful. So they made this in a relatively short time.

All in all, I don’t think it’s that bad. It’s only a bit underwhelming because there are no more legend skins after lvl 1.

The best rewards seem like the ones you get at level 1. That’s cool that they aren’t only attainable by poopsocking, but I also feel like I don’t care about the levels if I were to buy this. I might buy it just because I like the game, but it seems like they haven’t nailed it with cosmetics yet.

It’s such a shame because the cosmetics for Titanfall 2 were much fairer. The lootboxes were all earned via in-game rank milestones, you had a ton of skins that would unlock as rank milestones or “challenges” on each piece of gear, and even the Prime cosmetics (basically equivalent to ApeLegs’ Legendaries) that came out after launch cost $20 for a full bundle.

Then again, we’re talking about an EA-published game in both cases, so “fair monetization” is anathema.

Looked up poopsocking.

Might not be the same again.

The Battle Pass Bundle is quite a racket. Get the 25 levels that almost everybody will unlock just by playing casually for the low, low cost of $19.

EA ain’t going to be satisfied with no $9 a month on their games as a service mantra.
