Our article about lady toons (finally) in Star Citizen last week got a bit heated. One subthread was locked, unlocked, and locked again because the topic seems to rile so many folks up. Some people really do not care whether they are playing a blob in an alpha. Other people just don’t care about female toons because they weren’t gonna play one anyway and who cares about people who were! A whole lot of MMO players clearly get irate when games leave the ladies out and/or even deprioritize their development – and look at the venom over games like Final Fantasy XIV, which last weekend revealed its new races will be gender-locked at least for now. Yikes.

I’m clapping politely for CIG but also giving it a bit of side-eye too because damn, how long has this game been in development and it’s just now getting to this?

If an MMO had only female avatars (which I don’t think has ever happened) I’m fairly sure I wouldn’t play it. I don’t know. I look at the lore of MMORPGs (I know most don’t at all or only do to the point it affects which things they murder) and if the game’s world isn’t set on modern Earth then I’m kind of okay with however they want to do gender. It may mean I don’t play their game, but that’s perfectly okay.

If I’m getting angst or upset about this kind of topic for a game I’d have to remind my of why I play games (to have fun and escape all the mean/negative real world crap) and if said crap is creeping into my MMO space, then it’s time to go. IF the buzz around a game is primarily socio-political in nature THEN avoid like plague.

Have every gender combination you can. I don’t care who’s feelings get hurt by it. Have a trigger warning before you play, so people know if they need a safe space or something. In MMOs it’s even more important, you’re not just telling one story. Everyone is adding to the story.

What’s important to me is that developers make the game they want to make.

I don’t think video game companies should cave to the social pressure of providing every little experience demanded of them.

If a company wants to make a game about being an ISIS terrorist, it’s their right. Whether or not I’m offended shouldn’t matter to them. The customer can choose to spend their money how they want.

Half the people complaining about the new ffxiv races prob don’t even play the game and if they do won’t roll the new races anyways.

Everything is a trigger.

I honestly don’t mind either way.
Yes, i have preferences for certain classes to be a certain gender.
For example archers and casters will typically be female, and melee classes typically male….yeah, i know, pretty stereotype.
But that preference is never going to get in the way of me playing a game that doesn’t offer me those choices.
The only thing that is important to me is that it’s a quality enjoyable game, i’ll make do with whatever gender options are available from there on in.
I can understand that others feel differently about this of course, i reckon we all have our red lines, and fair enough.
This just isn’t one of my red lines.

Male, female, gender neutral I don’t really case as long as it isn’t gender locked because forcing people to play one specific gender is such bull.

What about Kratos or Aloy?

This is an issue deserving of more than my usual short posts but I am on a tablet so will stay short of a wall of text.

A game with as much cash as SC took this long to add female playable toons?

I always play female characters, I won’t play any game that doesn’t give me the option.

I will make males to see what they look like but if I play them at all they end up being put into ridiculous situations. (Not sure what this says about me …) I did make a rather handsome hobbit in LOTRO , never got out of the Shire.

Given the recognition of Gender fluidity I give props to any game that gives a wide variety of character types to male and female. And it would be cool to have a true gender neutral character ingame with no male female designation.

I don’t get why people are so sensitive to this at all. It should be in by beta the way I see it. Isn’t beta just bug fixing phase at that point so technically the game should have all the content in by beta?

In an ideal world, sure I guess it’s nice to have both genders in as soon as possible, but if it doesn’t happen it doesn’t happen.

Oh! And I really don’t care which gender makes it into the game first.

I really don’t care, but that is due to the fact that I do not imagine the character I control as being me or some sort of alternative variant of me.

When playing chess I do not imagine me being the king or the queen. I just don’t think of it that way.

In that context, gender lock is not so bad. I would not ditch a great game just bc. of gender lock.

Players should never be forced into a gender, who wants to play a male should be able to and who wants to play a female should be able to. There is absolutely no reason to take that choice away from players. In testing though i would not care so much for not available options.
