Sea of Thieves says pets and crossplay won’t make it into the anniversary mega patch

Sea of Thieves’ first-year anniversary celebrations continue this week across a pair of videos from Rare. Up first is Joe Neate on the official developer update video, primarily answering player questions about the latest patches. Neate begins with a bit of a downer: It sounds like pets won’t be in the “mega update” that’s still on deck. Apparently, the quality just isn’t there yet.

He also addresses the tall tales content, which is intended to combine the shared world with storylines, the first of which is Shores of Gold. Crossplay, however, won’t make it into this mega patch; expect it closer to May. In fact, it sounds as if everyone at the studio is working on the anniversary update, presumably excepting the people working on the content being held back.

Finally, there’s the annual review video, which recaps the game’s content rollouts and developer playthrough videos since launch.

No pets is a good thing. The idea being that will be their entrance into the Pirate Cash Shop – although I want this game to continue to make money and attract people.

I’ve seen the pets. It’s fine.

This really.

People can’t expect everything to continue to be free.

Rare is kind of a different animal for MS though. They seem to be the face, or one of few faces, of MS/Xbox in a sense. I think they think of them as a loss leader in a way. Loss leader in they don’t have mega hits like Call of Duty but they do have hits. Only MS has the numbers on their subscription service, which this game is promoted as being part of, maybe they are happy just keeping people in that.
