Make My MMO: You can finally roll a female character in Star Citizen’s latest alpha

This week week in MMO crowdfunding, Star Citizen stole the show with the release of its 3.5 alpha to all backers. Most famously, this is the patch that introduces playable female characters to the game, though it’s also got the Coruscant-like planet ArcCorp, the new flight model, and new character customization tweaks.

Meanwhile, Elite Dangerous rolled out its new forums, OrbusVR is hosting an open beta weekend, Ashes of Creation talked up its node system, Shroud of the Avatar celebrated its first birthday and pushed out release 64, Temtem delayed its next alpha update, and Spycursion’s Kickstarter went belly up – but its devs vowed to soldier on.

Read on for more on what’s been up with MMO crowdfunding over the last week, plus our roundup of all the crowdfunded MMOs we’re following!

What will officially release first, Ashes of Creation or Star Citizen? Take a moment to ponder what you know about each game. This one’s tough.

Im surprised as hell how many people on the forums are saying this patch is not ready for prime time. Usually the forums are full of sycophants, who lose all critical thinking when it comes to SC. But a large portion of them have mentioned how the 3000 error crashing your game is rampant, how flying on ArcCorp is almost a death sentence, how walking around ArcCorp brings your FPS to 5-10 frames (they have client side OCS, but haven’t mastered the code for server side OCS yet Chris himself talked about it on the latest RtV), and the death-by-ladder is getting worse, not better.
Of course a new patch is going to rough things up, im just shocked its so bad that the community is speaking out. The community is a huge cult of cheerleaders for Chris. So I am simply stunned!

Well, lets make sure we know what we’re looking at here because v3.5 is a PTU (Persistent Test Universe) build and not a live build. Testers are suppose to be more report accurate and critical about what build the actual public will get when it does go live.

Bruno Brito

Yeah. Even when i enjoy shittalking SC, this isn’t still a “released” patch, so, give it time.

We don’t need to make stuff up about SC to make it look bad, Chris does that enough.

Im not making anything up, I’m reporting what the forums are saying in overwhelming numbers. I guess they were spurred to speak up because CIG announced they would release it this past weekend. It obviously didn’t make it to LIVE.
And I couldn’t make stuff up even if I wanted to. Im one of the last people to get PTU access because I don’t subscribe, and when I did finally get PTU, I got blocked by some captcha bug that locks you out permanently.
Not shittalking, or making shit up. Just telling everyone what’s being said on the Spectrum.

Gene Elder

I guess they are saying this because CIG sent out a news letter saying it would be deployed live by Friday, and since the weekend has come and gone without a release to live, I guess they were right and CIG listened.
Thanks for remind me that it was PTU, even though I didn’t need reminding. I guess I should have left some disclaimers or something for the 3 people who dont know it is still in PTU.

Quote Gene: “Im surprised as hell how many people on the forums are saying this patch is not ready for prime time”

Don’t be surprised. Community is pretty self transparent about what are its expectations. One of them, quarterly patch, has never been about releasing “something” every single 90 days because calendar say so, but to get as playable as possible patch, as an Alpha patch can be.
The 30K error come at every patch as well as new bugs… and fade away.
The ladder is not getting worse but better. Most ships are ladder free bug by now.

What you describe was exactly the same situation with last patch adding Hurston and Loreville. Since then fps triple and flying over or wandering in Loreville as never been so smooth.

Strangely no pitchfork raised about 3.5. Indeed this is a mark of a mature community that request more PTU and to wait to get a more stable PU… You know because there are some outside waiting every glitch to claim this is the ennnnnd :)
