If I was in charge of creating EQ3, I’d reach out to the dedicated community of EQ1/EQ2 and figure out what they’d want to see in a new release. I’d bet most would say EQ1 with modern graphics with a bunch of QoL.

We’ve seen time and again appealing to the broadest audience is a recipe for failure – jack of all trades, master of none. The ‘gaem is ded’ crowd shouldn’t be your target, the people that have been playing your game for years through the good/bad/ugly should be your target, if its good, others will follow.

Take what it is that you do well, what makes EQ EQ, embrace the formula, make improvements where needed. I think the vast amount of older MMO players would love to see a return to form that looks good and feels good to play.

There’s only one SMALL problem with that: While EQ with graphics update would be cool and QoL, it’s still a niche audience for a MMO, a style of game that costs quite a lot to make. MMOs are expensive. Extremely expensive. Having a niche market doesn’t help paying the costs.

there is another problem too, EQ1 and EQ2 isnt event the same target audience really

True, to be fair, EQ2 could have several changes to make it look like EQ1. Mainly a diminish in XP, skill pruning and increased difficulty across the board. The game has a lot of zones already, you don’t need to overlevel the zone in 2h.

It wouldn’t fix the game, but it would make it a bit more enjoyable and oldschool.

Agreed but we got also 2 different communities(EQ1 and 2) that want different things. Make the 3rd closest to EQ1 gameplay and you will have most EQ2 players unhappy, make it closer to EQ2(sort of WoWish gameplay) and EQ1 players can get unhappy. Its generally a hard path to make a sequel there. What I liked with EQ Next is it went a completely different path(sandbox) that was still very attractive.

Yeh, but for some reason i feel it in my gut it would be riddled with QoL we didn’t ask for.

I don’t think EQ is as niche as people think it is…yea its old, in its current state the graphics aren’t all that great which would make it niche to people that largely don’t care about graphics, but gameplay wise, its not all that much of a far cry compared to whats available today. Theres more of an emphasis on group play, slower paced combat, crowd control, buffing roles, etc which would put off the players that are accustomed to low effort loot boxes, but I think theres a massive amount of players out there that crave the old school, but fun and engaging…or atleast flirt with the idea of marrying old and new. Can you speed up the combat while retaining the complexity and while making it fun? I think you totally can, its a problem I personally haven’t seen solved yet, but anything is possible.

At the end of the day, yea, its a risk. This topic in one form or another has been debated over and over again for years. Theres a wave of old school style MMOs about to hit which should give everybody a good idea about how they fair into todays climate, but a lot of those new old mmo’s are old school for old schools sake instead of taking what made those great and iterate from there.

It’s pretty niche, dude. EQ2 may be a triple A MMO, but it wasn’t on pair with WoW.

I don’t know, i think halfway between EQ1 and EQ2 is the sweetspot.

Different times man lol, I graduated HS when EQ came out and saying EQ is niche is like saying UO, DAOC, FF XI, even SWG were niche MMOs…pretty sure at one point, EQ topped all of them in active subscribers prior to WoWs systematic dismantling of the entire genre.

I’m old though, I just see it differently…

…but yea, totally agree with the EQ1/EQ2 idea…with the right effects to animations, anything can look good and still retain the same type of game play

I pay very little attention to anything tech/gaming related on April 1st. If you are familiar with a company it’s not too hard to see through the shenanigans. 😁

On a related note, DCUO had new TOS that I decided to actually read (because Daybreak) and I noticed that it had a whole section devoted to Landmark and player-submitted voxels.

Might just be really old stuff that never got taken out of might be new. Can’t say.
