Secret World Legends had a legit patch tucked inside an April Fools joke

Prepare to be confused! So back on April 1st, Funcom released patch notes for a “Shenanigans” update over at Secret World Legends. As you might expect, the notes were full of silly gags and in-jokes. What you might not have anticipated, however, is that some of the notes were actually real.

Leave it up to the dedicated community over at TSW Database for sifting through the notes and coming up with the veracity of each one. Among the “actually true” notes are the addition of a new mission called “Once More Into the Tower,” a new Glaring of Kyats pet (which no one yet knows how to obtain), a reduction in the size of PvP matches from 10v10 to 5v5, more rewards for PvP fights, and a PvP minigame called the Rosenbrawl.

So yeah — kind of more than anyone actually expected! But also not the type of content story-oriented players have been begging for.

Again – April Fool’s Day is tired, stupid and is for stupid people.

It’s always good to see Armsbend in the comments section hating on anyone who actually has fun. Just take a chill pill dude.

I would disagree with that. His criticisms have never really been directed at anyone having fun as far as I am aware. And if it was, I am sure you can still manage to have fun despite his comments. :)

He legit just called anyone who enjoyed April Fools Day events stupid people…

…well, there’s a fine line between stupidity and having fun. o.O

PS: Just for the record though, I don’t agree with his position and opinion on April Fools Day at all.

Once More Into the Tower – Won’t care until I have all the rest of the Museum done.
PvP group reduction (and tuning) – GODSEND, at least so far. A few days after the patch, I was getting Shambala matches within 5 mins.
Rosenbrawl – Not going to seek out a pass to enter it asap, but I hope its still neat when I can get in.

I like this kind of patch. Really. Wish it was on a more monthly basis, but I like it. I also wish story-oriented content was more regular. In terms of SWL potential, I’d have wanted New Dawn zone to be more complete feeling and Congo to be released to some extent. As well, I miss the old (Elite) dungeons, and want a shot at SWL’s version of some raids.

Basically, this patch was designed for the ARGers (and the PvPers) who skim through every bit of information that the game puts out. They know so much about the game that they notice when one new Achievement is added or there is something not quite right about the source of a new pet. And yes, all of it is quirky and hard to get. Just how the ARG crowd likes it.

I’m quite amazed at how much the community came up with here. I didn’t catch a tenth of it.

Things like this are why April 1st annoys me so much.

But not as much as I’m annoyed that you can only start this new mission by getting a random drop from farming old content.

And the new PvP minigame is apparently also locked behind either a random NPC invite chance or a time-gated invite from another player who’s already completed it.

Who thought it was good game design to lock a little bit of new content (in a game starved of it) behind RNG?

This mission can be found by acquiring the Peculiar Box, a random drop from Reward Bags such as Talisman, Weapon, or Glyph Reward Bags from a variety of mission content going from the Scorched Desert all the way to South Africa!

Damnit, a random drop fro mission rewards? I was excited for a half a second until I saw this. I guess I’ll log back in to see if I can get it pretty quickly, but unless the mission is absolutely amazing I can’t see myself grinding missions for too long.

So, just as a warning, you need to have completed all the Regional Achievements (effectively 100% the game) in order to open the box. It’s intended to be the hardest mission in the game and scales automatically to your IP.

Welp…RIP me even logging in then. I’m sure I’ve completed many of those (those are for finishing missions in a zone, including side-missions, right?) as I cleared out each zone, but I’ve never really played the game for the challenge. It’s great that it scales to your IP (still angry about the returned faction mission IP requirements), but it’s definitely not what I was hoping : (

Thank you for the info!

The mission is essentially a capstone to the Season 1 experience (which makes it a bit weird that South Africa dropped it, but only a bit). They found a way to now reward the last Museum items, and attached a new (hard) action mission to that. This isn’t a ‘new story content, come on in’ reward, but the like the rest of the patch, its more of a ‘thanks for sticking around, keep playing, you regulars’.

That’s one of the reasons it worries me so much. It feels like these days they’re catering to a small and dwindling crowd of hardcore fans, and that’s not a sign of a healthy game.

If they were just doing that, they’d return all old TSW content already. Much of this stuff is reskinned-new content. Sure its a task to get into Rosenbrawl but that doesn’t mean its content that caters to ‘a small and dwindling crowd of hardcore fans’ when people accidentally get invites by standing in Agartha.

That’s my whole point, who else is left still standing around in Agartha these days? They aren’t releasing any content to draw in new players or draw old lapsed players back to the game, and that’s not healthy for a game’s population.

I dunno, I see dozens in Agartha in every instance I run into. How many instances? I’m not allowed to know.

I do see what you’re getting at, I just don’t agree with the specifics. They know what only vets would want, and they’re not delivering that. They’re providing tweaks and alternate takes on existing content, not just (IMO) catering to vets nor appealing to new players. It smacks of a dev team that either has a great secret project to reveal, or (more likely) a very small team doing what little that they can.
