The Daily Grind: What MMO player behavior irks you the most?

136

One of the best aspects of MMORPGs is also one of its worst on occasion. And yes, I’m talking about the presence of those other unpredictable, weird human beings. These wouldn’t be MMOs without them, but sometimes those players can ruin an evening’s session with boorish behavior and juvenile antics.

Probably one of my biggest pet peeves when it comes to other players is when I see people putting others down with harsh mockery, insults, and condescension. When this happens, I see miserable people who are intentionally trying to make others miserable around them, and that raises my red level somewhat. That, and people blocking mailboxes and players pretending as if they created the very class that they are now lecturing you on playing.

What MMO player behavior irks you the most? We know you have a story or two to share regarding that, so spill!

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

That’s actually one of the few rules in our Star Trek Online Fleet (guild): No discussions of religion or politics in open Fleet chat. Private discussions only. It’s done so much to keep the peace in our guild day-to-day, it’s startling.

Oh, I almost forgot the “your build sucks” idiots who swear that you needed to use Mids to make a toon! Like, no, I don’t need to have X amount of DPS per second! He looks cool and plays to how I want him to so please take your “built to farm” spec having ass away from me.

Absolutely, yes!

As you say, my build works, it does what I want it to do, solo and in groups, so … piss off. :-)

If I wanted an opinion on my build, I’d ask someone!

Cheers,

PS: Related — if you say something about your parser add-on and my character’s dps, I will pay all the dogs near your house to bite you. And to poop on your lawn. :-)

I despise gangers… those who kill you without any benefit for them, just because they have problem with their parents and/or wife/husband etc…

People complaining about the game’s fundamental design in-game.

If you play WoW, then yes you’ll need a healer in that dungeon group, and someone’s going to tank while other’s spank. The trinity is fundamental to WoW.

If you play Eve, you’re going to lose ships. PvP is fundamental to Eve.

If you play BDO, expect to grind if you want to level. If you hate grinding, you won’t level. Grinding is fundamental to BDO.

Those are just examples; games are designed around different concepts. If you don’t like the basics, don’t play the game.

I agree with this. Especially the EVE example.

People who complain about the ESO character engine in-game is one that grinds my gears. “This game is stupid and the engine is terrible” says a person playing the game, thereby making them look stupid and terrible by proxy of deciding to spend time in a stupid and terrible game.

Or complaining about the MSQ in FF14. I liken that to going to a pizza place and complaining they don’t have burgers.

That actually happened to me once, Jon. Remind me to tell you that story some time when you’re in the mood to hear the tale.

Needless to say, the guy in question was a complete asshat.

My own, if I’m being honest. I could have been much better.

Ok, to be serious. Not a fan of those who bring in real world stuff. I log into an mmorpg to be immersed and relax. Now, if people feel the need to constantly talk about real world stuff (Stuff being politics, religion, their relationships etc), if they make a channel for it that I can avoid I’m fine with it.

Sadly that’s not what happens, these sort of folk blather on in public spaces, in trade chat, in world chat, in guild chat, in dungeon/raid chat. (sigh) The only other type of person who bothers me more are those who are abusive trolls just attacking everyone and everything. Really dislike and am quite bored with these sort of tedious people.

Man, this is why I turn off chat channels as soon as a start playing any MMO now. It was so bad in Star Trek online when Obama got elected. Racist comments in a Trek game was so strange.

Yep, always kinda surreal when you’d see crap like that in Star Trek Online. People… what can you do.

I can deal with folks being annoying or down right mean in chat. I can deal with elitism and overall snobbishness. I can even deal with rude, crass language.

But my absolute number one pet peeve, going back to the days of Meridian 59, is absolutely, 100%, griefers.

Griefers. Those people who seem to play the game for the sole purpose of RUINING the experience of every single other player they encounter. Hang ’em high.
