Otherland is working on finishing its current storyline after its latest patch

It’s been a few months since we checked in on Otherland – in fact, the last detailed post we did was last November, when the rebranded and salvaged Tad Williams MMO rolled out a major expansion called Fire Isle. But as it turns out, Drago Entertainment has been updating its Facebook page heavily ever since.

Back in March, the game updated with a big patch and its its new UI and world update. “As most of you can already imagine, we are not done with it just yet,” the team wrote. “Just like with every aspect of an ever-growing MMO, so will the UI continue to evolve with time. Now that we have the base for it, we are already making plans on how it can be further improved.”

So what’s coming next? Story, story, story, plus Metal Isle: The Tower of Blades.

“Right now we are mostly focused on bringing the NeoGrail storyline to a conclusion. We have most of the planing and writing done and are about to start implementing it. This is going to be the main focus for the content team for the next months. Finishing the current storyline is a major milestone for us, but for other reasons than it usually is in a game. In our case we need to wrap it up in order to have the game prepared for new worlds and storylines from Tad Williams’ next works on Otherland. We agreed with him to have the game take place in the new worlds he is going to create. While we are not allowed to disclose any specifics just yet, one of the things we discussed with Tad was for the conclusion of the NeoGrail storyline to be possibly the beginning of the new book. Now you see why bringing the NeoGrail storyline to an end in the current development cycle has become a priority.”

Otherland: Next Video

Hello everyone! We have been working on a new video for Otherland: Next and we’d like to show you a preview of it. It is a video we plan to use as part of a promotional package in order to get some more players into the game.

I like this game but it just laaaags soooo much to the point of being not enjoyable to me. It’s a shame, the world is really cool, it just needs polish desperately.

The mall city area would be the greatest player hub in MMO’s if people played the game. It’s just so beautiful. I can see 100’s of player gathering there and the clubs would be packed.

i thought the hub would be cool with a lot of people in it too. idk what the actual player cap for it is supposed to be tho or if it would meet that critical threshold to look awesome in that way but still i thought the same thing tbh.

It lags, and when I played they had this issue where the server would stop sending you data (your data was still getting sent through to the server, it just wouldn’t send anything back to you). It happened from the very initial first testing periods of alpha, into beta, into release. It actually was *much worse* in release than it was back in alpha, the situation started to happen far more often than it used to.

I tried and tried to get them to fix it and pointed out that there was no way the game would succeed with that issue and it was affecting the majority of players. They simply never could figure it out and fix it while I was there.

Every once and a while I go back to give it another go and every time that issue is still there. I don’t know if it’s still there now because it’s been some months since I’ve peeked in on it, but I’m fairly sick of trying and re-trying. If I ever hear it’s actually fixed, maybe I’ll go back again.

I tried it a few months ago. Great idea for a game and they are a small team working on it. But its true no one is playing it. The new UI is nice and combat is a little better. But they need to scrap that new player tutorial badly. For new players having to go through that no surprise, the game is empty.

how is this company still in business??? do they have other games that have actual players and make actual money? becuase it would take some convincing that otherland has or does either of those things.

the game was cool in some a e s t h e t i c ways but utterly mediocre in terms of gameplay and content was near non existent back when i checked it out, and friends that checked it out after “launch” confirmed not much had changed.

pretty sure from the comments here in the meantime it’s never had much content, but i also haven’t seen any word since this “big” update. becuase like, WHO THE HELL PLAYS THIS GAME???

Two of those three people had already left when I clicked that link. 66% decline in game population in such a short time.

that is an interesting question, I checked if the game is playable out of steam seems it has a “play for free” button in their website that gets you to a website named mmorewards that has other games too but if they havent fixed the lag and the most major bugs is doubtful they get many players from there too

I played it a bit and it was just a ghost town. I did see a few people once, but only once. Usually it was just me. And even then the lag and disconnect issues were just horrific. I wanted to play pretty bad but they simply couldn’t figure out how to fix their problem where the server stopped sending us data quite often.

To be honest I had forgotten its existance. I tried it last time around 2 years ago or so, and while I liked the setting, the bugs were too bad and limiting players. Also the server often lagged despite the low population. Gameplay wasnt bad but it wasnt great either – generally reminded a game in late alpha/early beta state
