Path of Exile plans a melee system rework for June’s 3.7.0 expansion

One of the biggest endeavors in Path of Exile’s recent Synthesis expansion was making massive rebalancing adjustments to the game’s spells, and Grinding Gear Games has announced that melee combat will be receiving a similarly extensive tune-up in the game’s 3.7.0 expansion, coming this June. According to a recent dev post, the changes are planned to address criticisms that Path of Exile’s melee combat is “clunky.” To that end, the devs are “making various experimental changes to the animation system that should help resolve these concerns and really tighten up the feel of melee combat.”

On top of making improvements to the animation system, the devs are also “experimenting with changes to systems such as accuracy, melee splash, leech, fortify, various Ascendancy classes, the passive tree, hit/miss feedback, melee base types, movement skills and melee damage availability on items.” Of course, the details are vague right now, as the changes haven’t been cemented yet, but the devs say that players can expect to hear more about the incoming changes “in the coming weeks,” particularly after the 3.7.0 expansion is announced in May.

I never really could get on with the melee combat in this game. I remember wielding a slow two-hander only to have it miss all the time and mobs take 3-4 seconds to kill. There was a talent that gave you a 100% chance to hit at the expense of no more critical hits, kinda stupid that you have to forfeit a huge source of damage just to make the combat functional. I might give it a go again if this rework fixes it though.

They should really skip one of their 3 month stinch and start repairing on all their broken shit, and a major major spring clean (simpler living) to get rid of some of the layers upon layers of mechanics stacked on top of the previous one.
This game used to be enjoyable, now it is just a one shot effect machine.. A seriously overcomplicated one. Back to your core GGG – Before you go over the edge. Wake the f.. Up.

“making various experimental changes to”

read as: “buff into heaven”

That’s the GGG way of balancing, after all. 95% of the time it means major buffs. Power creep is beyond anything I’ve seen in any other game and it’s still getting worse every major patch.

I think this is a good change that is long over due.

As someone who plays more casually, I find this game very hard to keep up with. Any time I get around to end game T15 maps, the next update is released, the skill tree resets and my build is useless. I play standard to avoid the league resets, but its still slow going.

A first world problem to be sure, and I cant fault a company for catering to their hardcore fans. Just sad…

I have the same problem as you. In this game, anything else than playing a meta build is not engame viable and ever so often the builds get destroyed. Super annoying! Stopped playing for that reason.

Ha, my brother has been complaining about this for ages, especially recently since he’s got thousands of old maps he can’t move around that just clutter up his stash.

I’m pleased by this as well, though I already largely went through and upgraded/ran the majority of my old maps. At least I’ll be able to transfer over my old unique maps I still haven’t run, so that’s something!
