City of Heroes spiritual successor Ship of Heroes confirms beta by the end of 2019

One of City of Heroes’ multiple spiritual successors, Ship of Heroes, has come out with a statement of its own following yesterday’s confirmation that a secret player-run City of Heroes server has been in operation for the last six years.

“With the surprise news yesterday that a private server for City of Heroes may have been operating for years, possibly with hundreds of players, we just want to reiterate that Ship of Heroes is developing full-steam, and that we will launch as planned on the schedule we have announced,” Heroic Games’ Casey McGeever writes on the game’s official site. “Ship of Heroes is the next step in superhero gaming with a completely unique setting, new story and missions, new engine and graphics, and infinite room for future game expansion. Our goal is to provide a gaming home to all of those who want to continue to experience the positive community that we have already assembled on our forums and in our Alpha tests. After all the support we have received, doing anything else would be a betrayal. Please show your interest by continuing to support Ship of Heroes.” (It was several thousand players, for the record.)

Ship of Heroes is due to launch into beta at the end of the year and is marketing itself as a game for “the WHOLE community.” The shade. We’ve been covering it since the end of 2016 when it was first announced.

I’m not sure how they expect to get even a stable alpha up by the end of the year without divine intervention, but I still support them, financially and otherwise. I love the shiny aesthetics and the optimistic atmosphere of the game. There is plenty of grimdark dystopia elsewhere for those who love that.

Ordinarily I would pick City of Titans over this. But frankly, despite my misgivings about the game being set on a space ship this game is the one with the most consistent communication and updates. Take notes Reddit Clubhouse of Heroes! This is how you build good will! I will be supporting this game!

I still have the screenshots of all of my CoH characters, and I can’t wait to recreate them in SoH! :)

Looking forward to this. While I’ve got some backseat quibbles here and there with what I’ve seen, we’re still early on. I’ve also got to remember that CoH didn’t grab me until I actually sat and played it, so I’m keeping an open mind this time around. ;)

Yeah, that news yesterday doesn’t change that I’m still watching this one.

I hope City of Titans steps up their information releases soon. I’d like to play a good superhero game, but for some reason the “city-ship flying through space” idea doesn’t sit right with me. Not that it’ll stop me from giving the game a try, but I’m a sucker for good themeing.

I feel that. But at the same time, the one thematic niggle I had with City of Heroes was its relatively limited geographic scope. Champions never really meshed well with me, but I liked its variety of settings. But being in an enclosed ship feels inferior to both. But it probably works for someone, and the game looks good in its own right.

That was always something that made me giggle. Paragon City had the Angel Grove Complex. The largest conflict between Superheroes and Villains took place in this tiny section of the smallest state in the US.

They even mention a few times how close the “Rogue Isles” are from Paragon.

Your preferences are your preferences, but a Superhero/Generation Ship mashup has certain meta advantages. Certainly allows you a lot of thematic leeway for the addition of new foes and difficulties.
