Torchlight Frontiers’ new Railmaster is the most creative class MMOs have seen in years

CHOO CHOO all aboard the Torchlight Frontiers train. Yep, PWE this afternoon revealed a new class, the Railmaster. Now, I have no idea why you’d want to play anything but a robot when a robot is available, but this is definitely going to give the robot a run for his money, especially since it’s based on an NPC in Torchlight 2, Captain Jacobi.

“The Railmaster is all about swinging a big hammer and laying tracks for their train companion. You can mix it up in melee, bring the full power of your train to bear, or anything in between. With the various options for your train, there’s a really strong feeling of utility when it comes to the playstyle of the Railmaster. You’ll steam through enemies once you’ve found the build that speaks to you!”

The dev blog goes into great detail on how the Railmaster’s style developed, but you’ll probably want to take a look at the skills – this is pretty creative for an MMO. You’ll be laying tracks for your “train” to follow you, adding specialty cars for the tracks, and summoning Ghost Trains. Awesome.

“This new class will be available with Update 5, which is expected to be released April 23,” PWE says.

They’re not ready for Open Beta. Not at all.

They’ve got a base game with only two of the frontiers, and the two that exist are not even finished. Not much story is there at all yet. The stuff that does exist is really generic. There are lots of bugs appearing in the higher areas as well. This will only be the 3rd class introduced. They are having server issues right now for some reason after you zone too.

There just is too much to do and some major issues to correct still, it’s not ready for Open Beta. Hurrying it out the door would be a huge mistake on their part. Rushing out a product that isn’t ready is what actually makes people say “so long”.

It’s clearly based off the engineer class from Torchlight 2. I really wanted to like it but nothing about it really clicked. The train at least gives it some thematic purpose this time.

As for Frontiers, I think i’m just going to give it a pass. I’ve come to the heretical conclusion that Diablo style games don’t need loot and would be far better off without it. Or at least give players an unobtrusive way to manage it. The genre has no need for banks or storage or any of that crap. Just record that a piece of gear dropped like the wardrobe in gw2 or something like Kanai’s cube in d3 and then let players retrieve or reroll it at will.
