Ship of Heroes’ signature hero Sword Blossom takes the spotlight in the latest newsletter

This past weekend marked the 15th anniversary of the venerable City of Heroes, and amidst all the hullabaloo about rogue servers (the most recent of which were brought online just yesterday), CoH spiritual successor Ship of Heroes has honored the occasion with a newsletter detailing the backstory of one of the game’s signature heroes, Sword Blossom.

One of the so-called “big five” aboard the FHS Justice, Sword Blossom rose to prominence during a Promethean surprise attack in 2440. As a “young hero with a passion for engineering,” she not only helped to fend off the attacking Prometheans but also ensured the integrity of the FHS Justice’s systems, and although most of the unprepared engineers under her watch were killed or converted to Prometheans in the onslaught, Sword Blossom’s efforts nevertheless prevented the ship from total destruction.

In the decades after the attack, Sword Blossom became the FHS Justice’s chief engineer, and in this role she has “quietly rebuilt the battered department, replacing the lost technical personnel with more combat-oriented volunteers capable of defending themselves.” Although the Promethean threat has been temporarily quarantined in the depths of the ship’s tunnels, Sword Blossom and her team of engineers continue to work tirelessly to ensure smooth sailing for the FHS Justice.

SoH is the game I’m most confident in becoming a thing, but those combat numbers are obnoxious… it might be a dealbreaker if you can’t turn that off. Too much UI ruins the experience of superhero games.

I’m sure that will change in time.

Looking forward to it.

I guess it’s good I’m burnt out on fantasy mmos so it’s good I’ll have my choice of Supers MMO’s in the near future.

It’s weird. I don’t really care about superhero games much normally and I actually picked up the CoH box at Bestbuy on a whim back in mid-04 as I was a little meh with EQ at the time and fell in love with it. I normally prefer high fantasy over everything else but this genre has made me re-asses my feelings on it, especially after the last couple of weeks.

It’s something about CoH, i can’t pin point it but it’s without a doubt done something totally right, or many things right.

This time it clicked only because i gave it a real shot and as not a big fan of super heros as well i could understand why i didn’t at that time.

It’s unfathomable they shut this thing down, does ncsoft hate money? Like F, now i understand the out cry.

swg is still the main game for me though, but i get coh urges, it’d be awesome to be able to jump in when i feel like it… but 1000+++ cues, extra servers, still not enough.

THEN… over the weekend i met a few of the people i did hard time with in SWL, literally just ran into them lol, so i dunno, this might go main?

Most of us as they are too, waiting before investing to heavy, one hasn’t even set up as yet.

As the saying goes it’s a small world, but that, that blew me away, i’ve mentioned before that most if not all the people i played swl with were huge coh fans.

I never thought i’d actually run into them in the streets, it was so f’ing cool..

Part of me really wants these successor games to succeed and even with the current CoX situation I keep my eyes on these but the characters here remind me of those bad unity Steam games that keep popping up which is a turn off. That ‘concerned engineer’ and his awkward stance especially remind me of those things. The animations are very stiff too. Blossom’s are better than the mobs and they may have the partly robotic/cybernetic reason to do so but it’s all stiff in this video.

And I fully admit that CoX’s avatars look dated but at least they look like their own thing.

I did back CoT, in fact it’s my first KS project ever, but didn’t back this one. Still may give it a try once it goes live.

CoT is another one i was unaware of lol. Not a super hero fan is prolly why i gloss over all these;
but…
I admit 100%, CoH is an amazingly freaking good game, so much fun.

I must have literally bought coh around launch, logged in, checked it out and returned to swg or eq2 whichever one it would have been at the time and never logged back in again. There is some familiarity but not much.

Agree, I hope SoH can smooth out/improve the animations and give them more ‘weight’ for lack of a better term but something I think CoH does better. There is a visceral connection that the sound design/particle fx/animation creates better than other MMOs, imo, even though it is the older game.

Otherwise, I’m happy with the progress SoH has been making.

Agreed on all counts.

I look forward to the day I can enjoy a modern super hero mmo.

Its something I have missed and while DCUO / CO are ok they are getting a bit long in the tooth now. Not that I have a leg to stand on in that regard either but you get the idea ;p

The whole coh thing is the only reason this game is on my radar at all, otherwise i’d prolly continue to skip right over it like i must have been doing because i had no idea this game even existed.

It’s looking like an awesome modern take on the formula.
