The Daily Grind: When’s the ideal daily reset for an MMORPG?

Ready your timezone clocks, folks: MOP Black Desert columnist Carlo proposed this topic for the Daily Grind today.

“I’m in Chicago right now, so I’m on CDT, usually PDT. Black Desert’s reset is at 5 p.m. PDT, 4 p.m. PST. But here in Chicago, it’s 7 p.m. CDT. I find it much more convenient because the MMO primetime out here is much later. So even though it’s 1 a.m. here, it’s 11 p.m. back home, meaning I’ve got more people doing stuff later. I just never realized how a two-hour difference in reset can change my day so much!”

I’ve definitely played the timezone game before too, having lived in three timezones across the US and having several EU guildies to coordinate with. Usually I’d say the ideal reset – if there must be one at all – is whenever I’m asleep so I don’t have to think about it. But I’ve also found it convenient to have afternoon and evening resets so that I can time my dailies and crank ’em out back to back.

When’s the ideal daily reset for an MMORPG? And then when’s the ideal daily reset for you personally?

Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with mascot Mo to ask MMORPG players pointed questions about the massively multiplayer online roleplaying genre. Grab a mug of your preferred beverage and take a stab at answering the question posed in today’s Daily Grind!

4pm my time. So that when I get home from work the reset has happened and I’m ready to play! :)

I prefer the 20-hour timer style. NOT 24 hours. NOT 23. Twenty is the best because it’s always been reset by my usual login time.

If it has to be a global time of day, then make it a regional timer at the graveyard hour for the region so I’ll never even know when it is.

Give the players a Daily Reset Button so they can choose exactly when to activate it and reset the dailies. But only allow one activation (per character or per account as designed) in any GMT 24 hour period.

Problem solved to everyone’s satisfaction. :)

IDC about daily/weekly reset timers. It’s nothing to me.

I look forward to the RQG technologies eventually getting to the point where there’s so much variety in random quests that they do not feel repetitive, and they can replace dailies.

Don’t care. Hate dailies and the concept of dailies. All it does is make me feel forced to play even if I dont want to, because every day missed is another day longer before I’ve unlocked whatever I need for gearing/raiding/whatever. Dailies have no catch-up mechanic.

Yeah, they don’t have a catch-up mechanic by design. They are trying to manipulate us.

If I play every day it should be because I’m having so much fun.

I’m against reset as a concept. It exists only to create an artificial reason to play every day.

If time-gating certain rewards is the issue, I’m a fan of something like FFXIVs levequest system. They generate over time, but you can bank then up to 100. This is nice for people who might not have time during the week, but might have plenty on the weekend.

For an actual 24-hour daily that can be gotten again right after the reset, I’m not sure how much it matters. 7 or 8pm seems to work pretty well for me, but games that have it at 3am are fine, too.
The important thing is that it is at a clearly communicated time everyone can find out. Midnight Pacific, or Midnight UTC/GMT seem to be common ones that are simple (at least until daylight saving changes mess people up :P ).
In addition to a clear time, having an in-game timer is great. I know of a few games that do this.

On the other end of “simple” you have GW2. That game has so many different daily and weekly resets that if not for the wiki I’d have no idea when they all happen. :)

I’m used to FFXIV’s 2am Pacific US time (GMT-8), and that’s a great time for a reset. There’s also the 8am Pacific reset for roulette bonuses. And the noon reset for GC turn-ins.

There’s… a lot of resets, now that I think about it.
