Chronicles of Elyria delays ducal land selection due to technical issues

But I built it all the same!

If you were looking forward to selecting your duchy in Chronicles of Elyria today, we have bad news for you, as the development staff has decided to delay land selection at the ducal level for a week. Worse yet, since it happens when you still haven’t picked your land, you can’t even express something to the effect of, “Duke Trab of such-and-such land is angered by this delay!” The delay wasn’t even announced until yesterday evening. It’s a sad day to be a pretend duke in a made-up land.

The official announcement cites the technical difficulties already encountered during land selection along with the DDoS attacks that the servers have struggled under. In hopes of mitigating everything, the land selection process will begin on May 13th, with all eligible players retaining the same relative position for picks as before the week-long delay. So it’s an inconvenient delay, but hopefully not the sort that would inspire any aspiring dukes to mercilessly tax the peasantry in a fit of pique.

While it is disheartening to see a delay about Domain and Settlement Selection(D&SS), I believe the most disappointing thing for many members wasn’t the delay, but the last minute announcement of the delay. I know many members, myself included were looking forward to seeing maps and being able to participate in D&SS. What I can only assume the reason Soulbound Studios(SBS) announced D&SS with a hard date, was that the studio wanted to have D&SS coincide with Kickstarterversary.

From my point of view, I don’t think anyone was holding the studios feet over the fire about releasing D&SS specifically on that date. Currently the overall sense from the community on Discord and the forums, is that community members want a delay, if it’s not ready. We want a finished product that we can dig even deeper into what domains we want to settle in. Unfortunately, the studio has an issue of hyping an event or feature and has yet to deliver on time.

I understand delays are normal, but I want to believe the studio listens to it’s community and will eventually change. My current faith in the studio is frankly waning from recent interactions with developers and moderators in the Discord where people will provide constructive criticism, but I feel it falls on deaf ears, because SBS continues to make hard dates.

As previously mentioned: These guys are clowns. Everything they touch is a shit-show.

From the little I learned about that game, is going to be a ffa pvp sandbox, where you buy “time” to live with your character. But every time you die (from pvp too) you lose time of your life and when your life is over you need to pay to buy more “life time” (except if you die in the ocean, then you lose all your life at once!).

Am I right? If yes, I think the pvp games are becoming more and more sick.. now when others gang you you dont lose items, but real money…

My own understanding is similar, just with a few things that make it potentially less likely to be a big problem.

The game does have PvP aspects to it, although I do believe that the NPCs involved make it a little different (especially since NPC and PC are roughly equivalent in terms of power, if not agency/skill).

I also know that won’t alter anyone’s views on the PvP side of this. It just means it will be less of a constant danger. Supposedly, however, those who just player kill a lot will also be more susceptible to losing more of their ‘life’ this way, along with fame being a detriment in the regard of dying. Again, not going to drag in any people who just want to be able to play without that impact on their game.

I will give them the factor that they are putting the ‘life’ system in as something in place of a subscription supposedly. That, and it is something like 9 months if you don’t die for the $15 you might spend on another game monthly. The big thing that interests me is the world simulation and crafting stuff. I would LOVE to see a game that broke from the PvP with that kinda focus, but it seems like it will be a while before that dream might come true.

This is a Kingdom style game so don’t confuse it with just another gank box. Rulers will have a vested interest in keeping players in their realm safe and geared, of course their enemies will want them to not feel that way so expect some conflict such as raids and war. An interesting aspect of these types of games is reliability and trustworthiness are often valued more then skill.

I’ve played a lot of sandbox MMOs, and I’ve never seen any mechanic meant to prevent a gank box work. Add in the ability to affect an actual monetary penalty to the victims, and you’ve got a mechanic that will draw sociopaths from far and wide.

I take it you haven’t played LiF then. Games like this where players are totally dependent on each other are nothing like games like Rust.

I have indeed played LiF. I’ve encountered plenty of people just looking to get their rocks off by killing everything that enters their line of sight.

As much as I am hoping this game revolutionizes the industry, I have the sinking feeling it’s going to be the next big flop. Even star citizen has something playable.

What’s the deal with this game? There’s a pre-alpha video from 2016, a couple of very short videos in 2017, and absolutely zero from 2018/2019 on their official youtube channel. They still don’t have a client they can show off, but are letting people who have paid a ton of money claim land, except it doesn’t work. All of their press releases and updates are just talking about cool features they want to add. There’s a whole lot of telling, and not a lot of showing going on. That’s worrisome.

The only thing that seems to go off without a hitch are the virtual money grabs they run.
